  • Your Kitchen Gadgets

What kitchen gadgets do you have and do you use them or are they collecting dust at the back of a cupboard?

    I have:
    - A dehydrator, I used it for 'sun' dried tomatoes and drying parsley so far. Its use doesn't equate to the space it takes up.
    - A deep fat fryer, which I don't really use because it's so hard to clean
    - A George Foreman, I don't really use as a grill pan browns much nicer
    - A mandolin, I used to use all the time until I got a Global kitchen knife, now I enjoy slicing with that
    - A set of bar optics, apart from gin, vodka and rum, I also have blackcurrant, orange and lime juice on them. Far easier than pouring it all the time.
    EDIT: And now I've remembered:
    - The juicer, which I get out whenever I want a large number of lemons or limes juicing which does happen from time-to-time, but i rarely use the non-citrus juicing component.
    - Pasta maker, it's just so much quicker to use dried pasta, but I have used it for my own raviolli a few times with great success.
    EDIT2: And now I've remembered:
    - Mini blender, good for making marinades, curry pastes and pestos. Use it quite a lot
    - Stick blender, I used it on some soup that was too hot and melted the security guard around the blade so now it won't sit on the bottom of the pan properly!
    - Apple corer and slicer, this is great when you're making apple crumbles etc.
    - MY NEW DISHWASHER!

The only other gadget i can think of is a strip of rubber pipe that is used for de-skinning garlic cloves. It's actually pretty good and doesn't take up much space for how useful it is.

    What have you got?

My Kenwood chef and attachments gets used most days, today I've used the dough hook for bread then the blender on some soup. Yesterday it was the mincer to make rissoles from Delia's recipe, the pasta maker gets used every Saturday. I use the juicer least of all because I hate cleaning it but its handy to juice the last of the apples.

Rubbish buy was a pancake maker, I don't even like them so not sure what possessed me to buy it.

I'm sure I have a few guilty secrets lurking at the back of cupboards (toasted sandwich maker?), but stuff I couldn't do without:

Stick blender (useful for getting the lumps out of so many things)
Mini Chopper (it's a Delia cheat, so it's got to be good )
                Coffee machine (can't stand instant)
Bread machine (worth it just for the smell)
Dualit toaster (a serious, industrial strength toaster)
There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't.

the list goes on and on.
                  Good buys:-

                  Microwave....It is invaluable
Kitchenaid mixer.....although I want the US only model...professional
                  Kenwood mini chopper.....excellent
Anthony Wirral Thompson mincer/sausage maker.......Hardwork but noisy

                  Bad buys:

Pasta maker......ready made just as good
                  Ice cream maker.......ditto
Stacked steam cooker...............fiddly and time consuming -prefer saucepans
                  on hob
Zanuzzi dishwasher.........don't talk to me about it

a good thread...quite sure I can think of some more

The only kitchen tools that I have are a bamix stick blender a kenwood chef, a slow cooker, electric whisk and a top drawer knife sharpener.

I gave away my breadmaker as handmade is so much better and does not contrary to popular opinion take much longer to make.

Items such as pestle and mortars, racks, scales etc are surely kitchen essentials and not gadgets.

Not really 'gadgets' but I also have a huge amount of ornamental cake tins, covering every festivity and celebration in the known universe

Don't really like gadgets very much, on the whole prefer to do things by hand but do have one or two I like:

Bread maker - love it (may not take much longer to make by hand but there was no way I was getting up at 3am to make it for my butties today!).
Kettle - is this really a gadget?
                          Stick blender - very useful
Toastie maker with panini inserts - handy now and again
Cook pot - really useful, will put a caserole on tomorrow morning before work and come home to nicely cooked food - yum!
Mini grinder / blender thingy - useful to grind herbs and a few other bits and pieces
Microwave - not even plugged in but handy to put things in to cool naturally away from prying paws

No longer in use and in a cupboard waiting to be freecycled:
Electric steamer - pans are much easier
Kenwood mixer - prefer to mix by hand in a nice big bowl
Ice cream maker - what's the point, was given this by my mum who didn't use it either!

Think that's about it although do keep considering buying a dehydrator. Don't consider pans etc to be gadgets so not listed, even the maslin pan.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My DH used to be a Chef and likes decent useful tools so we have a drawer full of little bits and bobs, but they don't take up too much space. Like PW we have a fabulous Bamix hand blender with herb chopper thingy, and loads of sharp knives - they take up so much less space than a food processor (I do like the look of the KitcheAid one tho )

Extremely useful things I wouldn't be without are the Microwave (for reheating the Coffee my DH has made me, every morning when I get up lol ) our Slow Cooker, which will get used a lot from now until about May, and a big cauldron-like saucepan/stock-pot thing which is invaluable for large batches. Oh yeah, we have a toaster because our Oven's grill is worse than useless!
