  • you are hosting a themed dinner party

    what would your theme be?

im reading a book of recipes from the war up until rationing stopped. my theme would be 1950 and i would serve real rationed dishes from that year followed by parlour games they would have played.

Can I come Zaz? *dons hideous orange flouncy dress

Not enough people to qualify as a 'party' but I've had some success with my retro dinner of prawn cocktail, steak Diane and Blackforest gateau
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

We've had all sorts of themed parties over the years.

Withnail and I where you had to drink every time they did. Don't remember much about that one. Or ones. Who knows!

Delicatessen parties where we all ate pasta and then lazed around watching Delicatessen - one of those ended up in a fight and someone going to hopsital. So, perhaps not a good idea.

Sports based ones [which as I didn't like sport needed some sort of focus] where you had to do something based on what the commentators were saying

I would love to host a Titanic before the Iceberg party. Frocks and fancy dress, indulgent food and champagne.

I'm thinking martinis and canapes, lobster, oysters, wine, champagne, sheer indulgence.

Hmmm. Anyone live near me fancy it?

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day

Survival theme, mostly 'wild' food (not necessarilly really wild, but of kinds that could be), cooked in ways that would be possible using a camp fire and only a couple of pans.
I'd allow bread (but no butter), wild-mushroom soup followed by roast pheasant (spit roast), with carrots (there are wild carrots in this country) and a wild-leaf salad.
Dessert would have to be what we had in Catalunya called "music", dried fruit and nuts with a honey-liquor poured over.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Happybunny has been trying to persuade her Girls Brigade group that a mad hatters tea party from Alice in Wonderland is a must for this year!! She wants to dress up as the mad hatter with her costume as close to Johnny Depps verson in the new film, decorate the hall with a checkerboard floor a rabbit hole on the doors long tables with multcoloured tableclothes teapots and teacups lots of balloons etc.... no she's not thought about this at all lol!

Strangely, we have regular themed parties (whenever we have a party basically) we invite everyone to dress from their fave musical era and music is supplied by the jukeboxes - one holding all 50's music and the other with allsorts up to 80's. Usually great fun and next one I might do American nosh with southern fried food and soda recipes.

Was at a eurovision party where they did the whole prawn cocktail, steak, then gateaux thing...same boys did a gay BBQ on Saturday...all had to wear pink or rainbow...some pretty outrageous outfits were adorning some equally outrageous individuals!
