| Unfortunately OWG, frost when you are working outside in a quarry at night is not good. It was real Kamikazi weather last night. -3 degrees and forcast -6 tonight.

| Eek!! Outside at night in a quarry?? Oh No! This is my first year of gardening, and I'd never paid much attention to frosts and suchlike, but since our garden has been flooded and a quagmire for the last 3 months or so, to not have to wear my wellies to go to the compost bin is great!

| The worst bit at night is that all of the fitters work in pairs and as there is only one sparky on at night we work all alone, like Billy no mates. Thankfully with continental shifts I only do 4 nights in every 16 days. However last night was a wee bit chilly indeed.

| I know what the billy no mates is like, I work from home virtually all the time and it can drive you a bit insane. Must be worse at night though

| Put your long John's on Piglet and keep cosy. Tip for newbies - buy a couple of max - min thermometers and hang them in various places in the garden and in the greenhouse if you have one. A lot of people don't pay much attention to temperature when they don't garden, but then it becomes important. Several thermometers wil let let you see where the sheltered spots are in your garden and where those little frost pockets are. And remember that any reading below 4*C is liable to produce frost although freezing point is 0*. This is because official weather recordings are taken at 1.5 metres from the ground and it can be much colder at ground level, therefore producing a ground frost - and that's where your plants are. Fleece will give you protection from a couple of degrees of frost and is well worth using. If this saves even 1 wee plant for somebody - that's good.

| Good idea Alice, I had not thought of that. We get a bit of a micro climate here so it would be good to get an acurate reading and not what the forecast says. Mandy

| thank you for the words of wisdom Alice. I'm going shopping on Thursday so will invest. Many thanks. I've double wrapped my seedlings under the (window) cold frame tonight, hope that will keep them safe. ![]()

| We had real snow last night! It only lasted till lunchtime though, but the roads were nice and quiet for a bit. Am now in four layers of clothing, tights and socks as well. I don't do cold very well!
