  • working environmental holidays in UK

Mikey Wills reminded me of Wwoofing. I spent a happy weekend at an organic farm in Looe, Cornwall a few years ago, did a bit of work in the kitchen in exchange for cheap B&B.

It was brilliant, even if the rain was horizontal and a horse bit me

We might do it again this year instead of EuroDisney (yeah, like Mr Sheds will take Little One to a working hippie farm, in her pink Bratz outfit. Can you imagine?)

    How WWOOF works

I like these kind of holidays. Nothing worse in my opinion than cooking on a beach! I used to go on conservation weekends with the Cons Society at uni. Nothing better! We did logging, coppicing, scrub clearance...and even sang like proper hippies around a fire (there were some hippies with us to show us the way, ha ha!).

It isn't all hippies, don't let me put anyone off.

There were some crusties there, some mild hippies, and some middle-class hippies. We were all there to learn some skills, make some contacts and see how other people live. We had a lot of evening fun with a campfire, BBQ and local brew too

The National Trust (a registered charity btw) run volunteer 'working holidays' of various sorts

            https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mai...iday_types.htm

            As a reward!

Free entry to all National Trust properties for a year
As a reward for completing a Working Holiday, volunteers receive a National Trust admission card that will allow the holder free admission to property owned or managed by the National Trust and National Trust for Scotland for a whole year.

I used to go Wwoofing (is there a song there?) but was put off a coupler of years ago by a couple of stays at different places that were not what was described in the directory. Both were fairly large commercial businesses who seemed to regard volunteers as cheap labour. There were no health and safety considerations, accommodation was my own tent, only one meal a day was provided. All 5 of us left after a couple of days hard labour. Don't get me wrong I expected to work but this was something else. When we complained to Wwoof we were told it would be looked into but the same entries appeared in the next directory.

Yep there is always a bad part to everything. I used to work with the BCVT and there was always half a bus of Hippes.

After a day of shoveling manure you couldn't get the smell of hippes out of your clothing.

I've been thinking about trying 'featherdown farms' this year, anyone stayed on one.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

The RSPB have lots of different volunteer opportunities too, most of them with free accomodation.

I had a teacher at school who used to spend all his holidays and his wife repairing drystone walls in counties where the sheep knock em down. I guess the sheep don't answer back like us kids did lol
