  • Wood pellet storage alert.

Knowing that some members use alternative fuels I thought the following maybe of interest.

The HSE has issued the following alert about the storage of wood pellets.

It is thought there have been at least nine carbon monoxide CO related deaths in Europe in the last 10 years related to wood pellet storage areas. Including three since 2010 caused by entry into wood pellet storage areas in domestic sites.

The HSE reports that experiments have shown that small quantities of wood pellets can produce life threatening quantities of CO in confined spaces.

Factors affecting the amount of CO produced are as follows.

Age. Pellets will produce more CO within the first six weeks on manufacture.

Temperature. More CO is produced at higher temperatures.

Wood type. Pellets made form pine produce more CO than those made from spruce.

CO levels will also increase with the amount of available oxygen present, exposed pellet surface area and amount of mechanical abrasion of the pellets.

I don't have this system, although I'd like it, but I "like" as you are the man in the know and it's good we have you as a go to knowledge specialist.

As VVG says ^^^. Its a non-starter for me because of delivery issues but I know several people interested in this form of heating - so thanks Potty. Good to know.

I have looked at Wood Pellet recently, but have decided to go down the route of connecting a wood burning stove upto my heating system instead.

When I looked though most recommended an outside store for the pellet hopper, this explains a lot.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
