Or you could use a black bin liner, again with holes cut in - but once the plants grow, no-one will be able to tell what you've used. Would love to see some photos of your final results.

                Hi Helly,

I have hanging baskets that are lined with coir and I find in summer when they dry out, watering can be a pain, as the water runs straight through. So this year I have lined them with an old compost bag inside the coir. I cut off the bottom of the bag, then up the side to open it out. I cut it into a square, moulded it into the basket, filled it, then trimmed excess away. Before I got the coir liners I used council black bin liners - does the job! Ans when the trailing plants get going, they hide the basket anyway!

I've used an old cotton nightdress hidden by long grass stems which I cut down and fitted round the pot. Inside that I put two sponges soaked as much as poss and then a tube on top of one of them so I can water directly onto the sponge. To finish off I put more dried grass on top of the soil. So far seems to be working.
NB, the cotton nightdress is on its second year and will be just about ready for the compost heap at the end of the season, so will have to hunt through the wardrobe for more basket liners next year.

Any natural fabric cut to size makes an ideal liner and when finished with is bio-degradable.

I remember from an old 'Gardeners' World' that Titchmarsh used old woollen jumpers.

Collect sphagnum moss from a hill, then put a piece of compost bag inside that, with holes punched in.

I use old compost bags too, turned inside out (with the black side on show).

Cut a few drainage holes, put a saucer in the bottom (to preserve a bit more moisture) and mix the compost with some swell gel or shredded washing-up sponges.
then, I "plant" a small flower pot in the top for receiving the water and sending it to the roots ... when all that is done, I can put some plants in
