  • Winter knitting

Just taken up knitting to keep me busy on these cold nights, I havnt knit anything since I was about 14! so starting small, had some odd bits of wool left over from various projects, so Im doing squares that I can sew together to make a blanket for sprout. Im dropping stitches and adding stitches all over the place lol. Anyone else got the winter knitting bug?

I've just been trying to hunt down my needles and patterns - there's something very cosy about knitting and it feels like we're going to need all the cosy we can get this winter!

Have done loads of knitting in the past when kids were babies. Now more into cross stitch embroidery.

Just about to take out the aran hat I started at the end of the winter - couldn't find my nice woolly hat today so time to get knitting again!

I knitted fingerless gloves for my son 2 years ago now my daughter wants some. I shall have to try and scale down the pattern as she has smaller hands.

If you take one of the supermarket bags, spread it out flat then roll it sideways, then cut into one inch bands, then join (knot) the bands (still with me?), you can knit it into a waterproof bag for shopping, or the kids swimming etc. And it's very therapeutic. But not very woolly.

Thanks Seahorse - I've signed up! There's a wonderful pair of fingerless gloves on the front page - think they'd be fantastic pressies for my teenage neices! Hope they invite me in soon! Back to hunting down my needles - haven't done any knitting for about 3 years now - the clicking drives OH nuts, but he'll just have to put up with it!

I love knitting in the winter, it's v.relaxing, but I never finish anything.
I've got about four jumpers knitted up - in boxes in my wardrobe. I hate sewing the pieces together.

btw, eBay is really good for knitting wool. Buy the cones that are used on knitting machines. If you get the ply right, it's the same stuff as handknitting wool but much cheaper.

I got the bug last week, got out some yarn I bought last winter and never started, got a new pattern and have nearly finished the back of a waistcoat/gilet! Okay so the yarn is chunky but it grew quickly which is motivating in itself. On Saturday I visited the knitting stall in the indoor market and was inspired by the lovely yarns and patterns available. The lady asked how long it was since I had knitted (confessed many years) and said that things have moved on quite a bit with modern yarns and stylish designs. I'll go back and have a proper browse once I've finished this waistcoat, otherwise like Two Sheds I'll end up with unfinished garments!

I started knitting a jumper for myself a couple of weeks ago, when i was trying to get a decent pattern i couldnt get one.I had a polo neck double rib pattern in mind.A friend came to the rescue with a seventies pattern from her gran!!Showing my age or what. But its just the job, warm, longer style, not to mention comfortable.

Try a finer yarn - 4 ply instead of double knit.
