What type of willow are you after? They come in many varieties, e.g. weeping, upright, etc. etc.

If it's a weeping willow you're after and you have time for it to grow I would just try and get a willow whip from someone who already has a tree and just stick it in the ground and it should grow quite quickly.

You need to be a bit careful with willows, if you live near a river or in a very wet area then they are fine, and as somebody has already said you can just put a short length in the ground and it will grow. Weeping willows should be well away from buildings as they will take a lot of moisture from the soil and at the extreme will cause subsidence, they also get quite big and whereas an upright willow needs pollarding every few years a weeping variety would lose it's beauty if you had to do that to it.

I wanted a pussy willow earlier this year, ( we do live in a very wet area) and I found a tree nursery which had some very beautiful ones, I bought several lengths of two varieties for £8 and cut them into about 20cm pieces and they practically all rooted. I would do a bit of research into varieties, I was amazed at what I found.
