  • Why are people still starving in this world?

    Hi all

Yes, sorry for starting this thread, just a thought in this time on the run upto Christmas and we all enjoy tucking into 'good old traditional fayre" it makes me think of the people who can't. Why is it? It's not right

  • #2
    Lots of reasons, including...
People who have plenty not being willing to share
People who can't feed the children they've already got having more
Local situation (wars, oppressive regimes or natural disasters)
and a whole lot more reasons
They add up to 'Human Nature'.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

It may not be right, but what are you [in the general sense of the word] gonna do about it?

It is sad and maybe in the future there will be a World tribe instead of the miriad of tribes we have at present all with there own remits.

Sadly it won't be in my lifetime and probably not in my grandchildrens lifetime but way, way in the future mans inhumanity to man will cease to be and hopefully the world will be a better place for all.

What can we do about it? That's what I think.
In many ways we are powerless to change the world order.
          Things we can do-
          vote
          criticise
          protest
          donate
          volunteer

In other words - do not accept that this is the way things are supposed to be - and fight to get things changed.
That would be very honourable thing to do.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

if you think you're powerless you are, I doubt whatshername in burma did [name escapes me momentarily due to alcohol], all you have to do is decide what you want to do about it, and then do it.

We're mostly wrapped up in our own lives, so we don't do things for people, we make a gesture, buy something from oxfam etc, but we don't DO.

If you're thinking of others and want to do something ,start small and work your way up. Make some sandwiches and distribute them around a local multi-storey in the night, do a charity run, go and visit a country/area/town, clue yourself up about various nefarious practices, look at the world you live in, but don't just see the surface.

There's more, but it'd be singularly boring and I am drunk and being silly

There is one primary reason why people are still starving in this world.
              Corruption.

Sorry to say, but while ever there's natural disasters like the earthquakes, Tsunamis, drought, floods, volcanic eruptions and the insects that devastate crops...people not getting enough food to eat will always be the case.
I have to agree with Bob on this one, there's far too many corrupt people in this world who like nothing better than cashing in on other peoples misery.
I'd love to think that every penny I've donated over the years would go to the people I've donated it to...but that isn't the case...why...2 words...FAT CATS, and not of the furry kind nether.

Corruption, greed. Ignorance. Over-population. It's a big and complicated issue.

What to do? Give to charity? It may salve your conscience but does the money go where you think it will?

I heard about a new kind of 'bank' yesterday, well it's more of a social lending scheme. You invest in a project to help others instead of 'investing' it in the bank. The money goes towards helping people get back on their feet, and not into the hands of the fat banking cats. Allia

There are about a dozen projects that you could invest in, covering children, the disabled, the unemployed, and projects in Africa
I'd love to be able to pay tax like this, ie choose with a click of a button where your money goes

Ghandi said something like, "there's enough on the earth for everyone's need, not everyone's greed"
Unfortunately that's starting to become untrue, as we just have too many people.

But don't worry, science will solve it and we'll be eating test tube pork pies in a few years.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

                      Agreed.

Yes, there are other reasons, but Spongey hit on the main one. Without it, I feel, many of the other factors would disappear.

No, it's still the case that this world has sufficient to feed the world, we might not all get exactly what we want but too many people chose to chose their eyes and ears to things that they don't want to see or hear or believe things that make their consience feel better.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Trouble is some people don't know the difference between want and need.
