  • Why do you GYO, what reasons

Some I can think of are

    1) It's cheap
    2) My Dad used to do it.
    3) Some of my relatives were farmers so it in the blood.
    4) The joy of watching something grow that you can eat.
    5) Excellent way of escaping "Her who has to be obeyed".
    6) I like electonics and it's a good guinea pig for may madcap projects(See below).

    Any others ???

One of my mad cap projects went as follows.
I have two watering cans, I water with one and the other I leave filling under the tap.
Invariably it's overflowing when I get back to it.
So, some electronics and a electronic stop valve and it now shuts off when full.
    Good idea or what ?

    Jimmy.
P.S. the older you get the dafter you get or so it seems to me!

OK I suppose reasons to eat are same as to grow.
      Lots of answers in there.

I was drawn towards gardening when hubby became poorly. Being stuck in the house was doing my head in so I tried lots of things to keep me occupied and gardening became my passion.

I know exactly what I put on my crops and what I put them in......I can eat organic when I want, rather than when the supermarket says I can. Also I like to grow things and varieties that you cant buy in the supermarket, (ie salsify and cultuce etc) or are really expensive to buy (eg beetroot - when you can find it at all).
Plus as everyone else says, the taste is fresher and what can be more satisfying than knowing its all your own work.

The freshest veg you will ever eat!
Also, oooohhhhh about a dozen other reasons, most of them not really describable.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Being a person who is always on the go and always planning something or organising things in my head and multi tasking I suddenly found that when I'm gardening I'm only thinking of..........gardening!
My brain completely switches off anything other than veggies, weeding, mowing.....its my chill out time, my down time.
It recharges my batteries despite the aches and pains the next day.
Plus the absolute excitement of watching my seeds grow and then eating my own fresh veg and being able to walk past shelves of them in the supermarket with a smug smile on my face......priceless!
I have never even given gardening a thought until last year but now I have been bitten by the GYO bug
Its nice to be important but its more important to be nice

Because i like to have my water boiling when i pick my sweet corn - 30 seconds from pick to pot, I like things that i cant always buy in a veg shop , the smell of tomato plants when you take out the side shoots, I like wandering round the garden in the morning in my dressing gown and eating raspberries that are nice and warm from the sun and because there's always space for another plant!
