  • Why do things happen when your on holiday.

We`ve just got back from a week in Scotland.
We had a good time except for 2 things.
On the Friday night before we left our 16 year old cat Crazy took a turn for the worst. He has had 2 strokes in the past 6 months, and the vet says until his quality of life is bad he didn`t need to be put down.
After a night sleeping on our bed (which he doesn`t normally do as he couldn`t jump down) he had some food and a drink and went back to sleep at the top of the stairs. We all said goodby to him as we allways did when we went away and we warned my mum who was looking after the dogs, cat, gerbils, fish and garden that he was not well.
On Sunday I rang to see how he was and my mum said he had died in that morning. She had checked on him at 8 and he was wheezing so she rang my sister who was going to take him to the vets, but by the time she got there he had died. He had passed away quietly in his sleep.
They have buried him under the conker tree in my parents garden which I planted when I was 5.
My friends say that he waited until we had gone to die as cats do that. Normally they go away to die but he hasn`t gone out much since his first stoke as he was a bit wobbley.
Not quite so bad was that my windscreen wipers broke while we were on holiday, it was chucking it down and we had to go back to our site on the back of a lorry, luckly they were fixed the next day.
When I first got back and went up the stairs there was a box on them and I thought it was him. Now when I go up the stairs I expect him to be there.
I`ve sorted all his stuff out to give to a friend for her cats, and now the bathroom seems empty without his littertray and the landing is bare without his food bowl.
After having him for 16 years it seems strange without him.
At least my veggy garden has done well, lots of runner beans and carrots for the freezer, and the sweetcorn is coming on a treat.

Oh Sharon, i am so sorry you have me in tears here and i been emotional the last couple of days anyway. It will be very strange, i really feel for you, but how lovely of your mum to bury him somewhere so special.

When we lost Rosey (our 8 yr dog) we had only moved two weeks before, so we placed her up the top of the garden and i planted 3 Rose bushes for her called "Simply the best", the one in the middle was the first to flower and this is exactly where she is! she was telling me she is still here with me.

    xx

So sorry you have lost such a long term companion and friend. I know it's hard to see sometimes, but it sounds as if he went peacefully and did not have to suffer the trama of a visit to the vet. Passing away in his sleep was the best option for him, although it must be very hard for you not to have been there.
A couple of years ago my 15 year old Tansy passed away. I had woken about 2am and could not get back to sleep so went downstairs to make a cuppa. Tansy was laying flat out, wheezing and not able to stand. I sat with her for the next hour stroking her and talking to her until she passed away. I knew her time had come, she hadn't been ill, just slowing down. She knew I was there with her and I felt she was best dying in a familiar place with me beside her.
It will be a long time before you stop expecting to see him in his favourite place or waiting for his food, but you must have wonderful memories of all the times you spent together, and the funny antics he got up to. All my sympathy, and do not feel you shouldn't grieve so much for an animal (advice I was given!). He was a much loved member of your family and will be rightly missed as such.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
      Now a little Shrinking Violet.

Sharon I'm so sorry to hear it. My dogs died years ago, I didn't offer any other dogs a home after they died because once they'd gone I realised that my chronic asthma was actually an allergy to their fur, but I still miss them and dream about them at least once a week after all these years

On the plus side, the memories now bring a smile rather than a tear, but it takes a good long while, just go with it. If you hadn't loved that much, it wouldn't hurt

            Hi, sharonr

Sorry to hear about Crazy the cat. We've just lost Molly, one of our Basset Hounds. (That was just before going on holiday, five weeks ago today). I wept like a baby and have tears in my eyes now while i am writing this. Our pets give us so much and they leave a big hole when they've gone.

Looking to the future. Just think, somewhere out there will be a delightful ball of fluff who is in need of the love you have to offer. Sorry if I sound a bit soppy.

Tomorrow we are going to look at some pups. A new dog isn't a want, it really is a need. Nothing can replace the pet you have lost but another furry friend can benefit from your love.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Thank you all for your kind words. I felt so guilty leaving him but as he didn`t look in pain we had thought it best not to stress him out with a car journey to the vets.
We would love to get another cat but Storm, as some of you might know likes to try and eat smaller animals so we are going to wait and we might get another later.
Also when I went to my mums today I saw a picture in her lobby of Crazy and Spirit from a few years ago and it made me smile.
