Because they are mindless idiots, have never been brought up without proper values (heck, I'm sounding like my Dad). I really do believe that a lot of the young thugs are the result of poor parenting - I see so many mums that have no idea how to be parents in the course of my work, and most of this goes back to the way they were brought up. I really don't know what the answer is - any suggestions? We had a case recently near here when unknown persons broke into the local pets corner and massacred rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens, leaving the broken bodies to be found in the morning. The local kids were heartbroken, lord knows how the owners felt - and WHY!!!

I'm not sure Nog meant physical punishment, but the laws for the most part in the UK dont discourage bad behaviour. Its only seen as a minor crime and the, generally, youngsters that carry out these acts know that the worst they are going to get is a metaphorical slap on the wrist.
There is a lack of moral guidance as well, but havent things been ever thus? I read something many years ago where some Egyptian children were put to death for vandalism. (Days of the pharoahs, not recently). I'm not advocating capital punishment for this particular incident, just pointing out that nothing is new.

              I have no idea.

25 years ago [goodness, I sound old] we were in Mote Park in Maidstone and a few 'lads' were there with shotguns trying to pick off various ducks and swans. All we could do was leave and call the rozzers but by the time we got back there [no mobile phones back then] they had gone.

I suppose in a way they pick on things that won't/can't fight back.

I was watching the news the other week and was shocked when they reported that a young, recently born, Fawn had been kicked to death by youths. I just wonder what the hell motivates someone to do this. The police spokesman said he was very concerned as sometimes this type of individual goes on to kill humans.

                      Despicable.

It is the result of a broken society where many parents don't have values and neither do their kids. A society where thugs do not get what they deserve and too many people get away with mistreating animals. It's a society where "human rights" only applies to criminals, terrorists, Dids and those that are.... well..... inhuman. A society where rapists, serial killers, murderers and their accomplices do not get what they deserve - an eye for an eye.

                      Sorry............. rant over

The simple answer is 'because they can', and often the ones who do this are pathetic incompetants who lack any sense of the value of ANYTHING (including themselves). Regrettably if they have reached adulthood (or even teenage) with this mental attitude, the chances of changing them are remote (it CAN happen, but rarely) and all that can be done is to make them fear the consequences of doing such things.
Increasingly society fails to achieve this 'second best' solution when it is probably too late for the ideal answer.
Even for those who can be changed, fear of the consequences may be a vital first step towards that better solution, but Political Correctness doesn't seem willing to use that approach.

I blame all the do gooders, the ones that sit at home saying ' YOU CAN'T SMACK YOUR CHILDREN'.. i know theres some people that can't just stop at a smack, but that just go's to show what we've all just been saying.
If children were brought up with knowing that for every action there's a reaction, maybe we would be able to to get back to some sort of society we could all be proud of, instead of locking our doors, cringing at whats on the news, and thinking "what the hell went wrong".
I was always learnt if it wasn't yours ,you didn't touch it, and if it hadn't been payed for, you didn't take it, if i did something naughty, i got a smack... its not rocket science..
I'm sorry for ranting, but this sort of mindless distruction of our wildlife really makes my blood boil
On the other hand there are still a lot of children/youths that are very well rounded members of our society and i take my cap of to there parents...WELL DONE

I had the same ginger - but without the smacking.

It's not rocket science to teach your own kids stuff - rather than expect teachers to do it for you [not you personally - people in general].

                            It's also unfortunate that

a - good kids very rarely make headlines

b - bad kids making headlines breeds bad kids wanting to make their own headlines - local or otherwise.

My dad was a man you wouldn't argue with, unless you had a very good reason, he was strict, but a very family orientated man, both mum & dad brought my sister & me up both the same "as they were brought up".... now he's 84, and i'm a bit too big to smack... but he still has my respect and i think that go's a long way. I'd do anything for my dad, how many kids can say that these days ????....
