  • Why Dad Why?

I was on the allotment digging today and my mind wandered (as it does) to one of those big 'Meaning of Life' questions.

If I'm digging say 18 inches down into the soil, why do I never come across slugs, only worms and millipede type thingies? I understood slugs live underground - do they all slither under the paths when they hear my fork thud on the soil or do they just hide until we plant some new veg- so where do they go to my lovely?? Has anybody seen them??

I hope all the slugs in our garden have become super snacks for the chooks - it would be nice to garden without fear of everything being scoffed as soon as it appears this year!

Our chooks run screaming from the biggies, scared of them! lol

Surely they can't live too far down as they might suffccate? I think they only live a few inches down. Or maybe you haven't got any and they are all round my house!

Slugs can't burrow very well so they can't get too deep. I think they mostly overwinter as eggs so there are less adults especially with this cold weather.

Keel slugs (Tandonia budapestensis) live underground and are superb burrowers, other slugs hide under stones, long grass, weeds, decaying vegetation etc.
