i am sitting in my garden writing this and there must be atleast 20 bloomin whites flying everywhere, i have a fish tank full of their eggs, and caterpillars from newly hatched to cocooned. can i, should i, "dispose" of them. i love them but they are well and truely going mad, i have far too many wasps in my garden hunting for them so i now i have resorted to trapping them so the local population doesnt explode, but by removing the wasps, nothing will eat the caterpillars, so is it allright for me to???? (not eat but kill...)

Any caterpillars that are eating food intended for you and your family can and should be got rid of, preferably at the egg stage.Comment

For me, it's easy to get rid of caterpillars - I usually hose the grubs off the Brussels sprouts leaves.
Butterflies themselves are a different question - they're so beautiful and cheerful, even though I know they're just house hunting for a place to lay their eggs. I think they make a beautiful picture in the garden.

Depends which butterflies. If we're talking cabbage whites, I'm not quick enough to get them so just remove eggs and caterpillars. Any other varieties I leave alone.AKA AngieComment

Poor old cabbage whites! I was watching them flying around the plot the other day as i was sat having a rest from the weeding etc and i know they eat your brassicas but they really are some of the most beautiful and graceful creatures.
Being a Buddist i couldn't condone killing them but can understand why they drive folk crazy.When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author UnknownComment
