I have just read about this one, he was taking his little daughter to visit his newborn son and wife in hospital. A couple of hooded thugs were involved. Utterly tragic. I don't know what the answer is to this either.

It was horrendous, not sure what the answer is. An amnesty would only help if people want to get rid of knives. Frightening stuff

I don't know where it is all going. Two young lads killed in london, one stabbed and one shot, a bloke getting a bottle of wine killed because he would not give it to a bunch of yobs and now in front of his young daughter, what impression has that left on her young mind for the rest of her life. The do gooders say blah blah human rights blah blah what about thye victims rights? There is no deterrent anymore they only get a slapp on th ehand and told not to do it again. A good thumping is more realistic. I heard of a paedophlie puttimg in a claim because he has no toilet in his cell. Hang on I was under the impression this is a punishment not a holiday. The police have thier hands tied. I am glad they still do the job and do not give up when thugs walk free. Perhaps we should bring back capital punishment. No one willing to pull the lever? I bet there are loads who would. Get in the queue I'm ready to pull it. They say it is not very common but there seems to be more and more. Come on government bring back real punishment. Make them think twice about thier actions.

OK, here's my take on it for what it's worth and as an old time copper who can remember the streets back in the 60s and 70s when this sort of thing was so rare as to be truly remarkable.

No more pussyfooting around, take on these gangs head on. No more 'community service', no more being nice and understanding their poor upbringing and their deprived childhoods.

The members of the gangs/drug dealers/professional criminals have no compunction about using firearms, so give the police more opportun ity to deal with that sort of thing head on. Serving policemen that I know are so frustrated at knicking these scrotes and seeing them effectively walk free, they're not even bothering in some cases.

The kids in the gang in Toxteth involved in the killing of that little lad openly boasted on the internet that they carried guns and they weren't afraid to use them. Ok, they think they're soldiers so treat them like soldiers - they fire at people, the Police fire back. The lads convicted of the crimes associated with it were like feral animals and despite their deprived upbringing and poor schooling, the little b******s were savvy enough to try to destroy the evidence, wash the shooter down in petrol etc etc.

And the shooters name was all over the Internet within a couple of weeks but nobody would give evidence against these rats because they were too intimidated by them - by a gang of what should have been school children!!!!! Frightened by gun wielding school kids - come on, who's the victim here and whos civil right were being impinged if the Police really went for these gang members and took them on at their own game.

And before I'm accused of being a rabid right winger, I'm a life long member of the Labour Party, a member of Amnesty etc etc but really feel that the 'poor offender' approach to policing and criminal justice has to stop.

This has GOT to stop. Although in the 'old days' people complained that the Police were brutal - and some were - at least the streets were safer in general, this sort of violence was incredibly rare and people were not scared by the fear of crime, let alone the reality of crime.

This HAS to be stopped and the namby pamby government reaction - all governments, not just Labour - has let this urban warfare get out of control.

Sorry if this is a bit of a rant - but I can recall when streets were safer, when knife and gun crime was so much more less, especially gun crime - and when the Police and Courts were treated with respect and had some authority.

Yes, something really must be done to act as a deterrent. Capital punishment for murder where there is absolutely no doubt of the criminals guilt perhaps? Or what about Death Row where prisoners are kept for a heck of a long time. Life imprisonment to mean just that - for the rest of their lives, no parole, no "added comforts", just prison. These scumbags have taken away the human rights of their victims so should be prepared to forego their own human rights too. Pleading insanity? keep them in a secure unit in a mental hospital with the same facilities as in prison. I really do get so angry at the "punishment" criminals get, it's absolutely disgusting.

My sympathies go out to the families of these victims.

They could ban knives. It worked with the private ownership of handguns. Since that became law none in the country has been shot since they did that.....Dho

What's wrong with compulsory National Service? It works in Denmark, and presumably other countries. It gives young people the discipline that they are so obviously lacking. Hopefully it teaches them respect for their fellow man, and maybe even a trade in the process. Or am I just being naive?

Nowadays, some of the kids in these gangs are in bl**dy primary school . No one seems to be made accountable for their own children anymore, in fact some parents are even afraid of their own kids! They have no discipline at home or at school. When I was a kid, if I was naughty at school, I got another telling-off at home that evening from my parents. A teacher tells a kid off now and the parents have a go (or worse) at the teacher! What is society coming to?

Some people have no respect for other people and their feelings.
For some people its all "me, me, me" and how hard they can look to their friends.
Not long ago they use to be frightened if the police turned up on their doorstep, but now because of some of the laws here they know they can`t be touched.
The laws need to be changed to aid the victim not the villan.
I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

I agree, there is too much leniency where the police are concerned, kids should be scared of the police but they are not, gone are the days where a bobby on the beat used to scare the kids........i was shocked the other day when in tesco, a young lad was going through the self service checkouts paying for a knife, noone was going to stop him.....he made it to the exit before I ALERTED staff.......the person monitoring the checkouts didnt notice.
