  • When is a bed not a bed?

I'm about to take delivery of a new bed - so I asks SD 'how do we get rid of the old bed' (bearing in mind the mattress is only four years old*) 'Council will take it' says he.

So I call to arrange and it costs £20 for them to take a mattress away, if you want them to take the whole bed (i.e. base also) then it is £40

Then I got to wondering (too much time on my hands clearly!) what do they actually do with the mattress/bed? I'm really hoping not landfill - but what would they do with it?

Council is too much hassle for me.

We got £80 for our old bed on eBay, and they came and took it away too. Job done.

Or FreeCycle if you can't be bothered to sell it.

I used the base (divan) of an old bed to make some cold frames/nets.

Stripped off all the material and cardboard. Coated all the wood with preservative then used the plastric that the new bed came in to cover it. The plastic wasn't/isn't UV stable however, so it's all perished and fallen off. However, now I'm going to get some netting (possibly net curtains) and make them into nets to cover over brassicas and alike.

Took the mattress to the tidy tip.

my brother had our old bed as we don't have any more soare rooms since OH has an ofice in one (and we swapped it for a sofa for the boys room).

Any family members would want it?

                  £20 seems worth it!

I would really like it to go somewhere where someone could get use of it but I've a 'thing' about selling/giving away mattresses - a bit like giving away your knickers if you see what I mean ops:

I've seen someone get 5 elephants in a mini once.

                              No wait, I'm joking.
