  • What's your ideal weather for this time of year?

We're a good way through February now and I think I have decided on my ideal weather for February. I wonder what's yours and why?

Most gardeners would be wishing for plus 10 degrees Celsius right now but I find myself wishing for frozen ground and lots of sunshine hours. I spent far too long digging in a quagmire of clay (my onion bed) yesterday and the advice from a few weeks back from a seasoned plotter on the allotment springs to mind 'digging the soil is much easier when the ground is frozen'.

He unfortunately said it after I had deliberately been avoiding digging frozen ground for a while thinking it would be too difficult. I tried it, and he's right, the tools go in easily, and come out cleanly. It's only the first inch or so that's actually frozen and underneath the worms have made a fantastic structure that is less liable to damage.

I would of course have to sit on my itchy fingers as it's cold out!

Sunny and the last of the frost, that's what I'm hoping for.

Not the sleet that's falling here at the moment

It's still only Feb, I'd think that was unseasonably warm.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I would hope for a nice sunny day but then cool at night with a possible frost on a specific night during the week, hey getting some warning would be nice and be able to cover plants up. Think we need the cold weather to break up the heavy ground and kill off any germs and bugs.
It is very warm here today we have had a couple of snow showers first thing but it didn't stick. But this time five years ago we had a shed load of snow and really cold weather at night.

We have had two glorious days of sun and 15c. Now 3c and sleeting :-(
I like the cold to prep the fruit trees and kill off some of the bugs. Cold I can cope with. Days of rain I find depressing for me and for garden work.

As long as it doesn't snow, I'm happy with whatever we get

That's true, tho I'm thinking wishfully here

The thinking behind 10 degrees was then it would be warm enough to have tomato seedlings in the unheated greenhouse!

Snow please! Failing that a good long clean dry frosty period, so the mud dries and my dogs stay clean!

I like anything above 6c at this time of the year with some sunshine. A Light wind to help dry the soil. Rain for a few hours at night once a week and no frost. Dont want much, do I?

We're a long way off getting that sort of temps over night, thought you were talking about a consistent day temp. Will be sowing my toms in about a months time so no need for me to worry yet.

It's winter innit, it's supposed to be cold . Frosty nights and decent during the day is fine.
