  • What is it?

    I found an old book of nursery rhymes yesterday and this was in it.

    As I walked in a field of wheat,
    I picked up something good to eat;
    Neither fish, flesh, fowl, nor bone.
    I kept it till it ran alone.

    What did I find?
    I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

      See if this helps.

      In marble halls as white as milk,
      Lined with a skin as soft as silk,
      Within a fountain crystal clear,
      A golden apple doth appear.
      No doors there are to this stronghold,
      Yet thieves break in and steal the gold.
      I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

        I've heard this one before but can't remember the answer! I think an egg too.

          It's got to be an egg - a white one

            And of course "I kept it till it ran alone" refers to the chick

                You are correct, it's an egg.

                There was this last one as well about an egg

                As white as milk,
                As soft as silk, As yellow as gall,
                As round as a ball;
                Found by a baby,
                Bought by a king,
                Tell me this riddle
                I'll give you a ring.

                But I can't work out the bits about a baby and a king
                I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

                  There is also one
                  "a box without hinges, key or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid" (Isn't that the one Bilbo tries on Gollum?)
                  Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

                    As I came through the garden gap
                    who did I meet but Dick Redcap;
                    a stick in his hand, a stone in his throat,
                    if you tell me this riddle, I'll give you a groat.

                    (no I'm not old enough to have been paid in groats!)

                    PS - tell you later!

                      When I was a little lad, my sisters used to hang them in pairs on their ears as 'earings' There's also a well known Victorian (I think) song about them.

                        If anyone has been watching The Victorian Farm on TV, you should get this one right away.

                        Flour of England, fruit of Spain,
                        Met together in a shower of rain;
                        Put in a bag tied round with a string,
                        If you'll tell me this riddle, I'll give you a ring.

                          Ah yes - mine (as Terrier guessed) is a cherry!
                          His is a pudding!

                          How about

                          Little Nancy Etticoat
                          with a white petticoat
                          and a red rose.
                          The longer she stands
                          the smaller she grows.
