  • What was your first car?

We've been chatting about cars on the Chat Thread this morning, so it has inspired me to ask...

    What was your first car?

Mine was a red Fiat Uno 45s called Jasper. I bought him with my saved wages from my student job at Sainsbugs.

I did not have driving lessons until I was in my early forties. My first car was a Nissan Micra and she was / is called Miranda. She is still going strong. When I bought my second car (Nadia the Nissan Note) I gave Miranda to my youngest son.

The Note is bigger with a bigger engine and loads of gadgets but is nowhere near as much fun to drive. Miranda only has a 1 litre engine and so you have to really work the gearbox to get the best out of her. Much more fun.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

VW Polo, £800 in '91. A wreck, it cost me a fortune in garage bills and I was glad to get rid of it.

A rust coloured Mk1 Ford Fiesta that I bought for £65, named Elsie on account that her number plate was ELC 855Y.

LadyWayne's Mum used to hate me coming round in it as I'd have to pull the choke (remember those) all the way out to stop it from stalling.

I was given a VW Polo by my MIL when she got a new car. If I dropped the kids off somewhere they'd duck so they were'nt seen in it, I couldn't wair to get rid but the bladdy thing just kept on going.

Did you have the trusty peg to keep the choke out?

No, it was a pull and twist and seemed to stay out long enough to warm up.

I remember coming home from LadyWayne's Parents' house and there was a certain "hill" I'd have to take a run at in order to make it up. As long as I was doing 50mph when I hit the bottom I'd make it.

I say hill, but it's more a gentle incline!

Mine was a red Rover Mini Italian Job Special Edition (I was 17)
The Rover Mini Italian Job Special Edition was released in January 1993. It was astandard Mini Sprite with extra trim and decals. It was available in red, white, blue, and the popular British Racing Green. All models had white grilles, white Minilite copy wheels, and black bonnet stripes to represent the leather bonnet straps on the film cars. Special decals and bonnet badges were on the exterior, consisting of a crossed English and Italian flag with 'The Italian Job' white lettering - except on the white cars where it was in black. Interior upholstery and equipment was based on the Cooper, but with small Italian flags on the front seats and steering wheel. Halogen driving lamps were fitted at the front, the windows featured smoked glass, and the rear side windows opened like Cooper/Mayfair models. Later production models featured the interior bonnet latch and a modified grille. One unwanted alteration was the placing of the screen washer reservoir and pump in the boot, with a long pipe going up through the roof and down again into the engine compartment. This meant that the washer spray was particularly pathetic, and froze up completely in cold weather conditions.
Some dealers fitted extra lights and a sunroof, although none were fitted as factory standard. 1000 right-hand drive models were produced for the UK, whilst 750 left-hand models were sent over to Italy to contend with the Turin traffic. Doubtless they are still there, cutting up Fiat Cinquecentos, haring down piazzas and hiding in the carparks at Rover Garages!
She was called Lulu, and I loved her with all my heart, but got into plenty of scrapes in it.

My mum made me sell it when she found out I'd rolled it into a ditch with 5 friends in the car, and we'd had to get out and get it back on the road.

She had been researching it, and hadn't realised they were quite collectible cars, so before I damaged it further, we sold it and I ended up with a rubbish Metro instead!!

If you can remember the registratiuon number you can find out if it's still on the road:

                              Page Has Expired

I think the "liability" date is probably a good indication of when it was last used/taxed/insured.

Alas, I think Elsie went to the great scraphead in the sky in 2001.
