  • What a muppet

    I am.

Some years ago my Grandad died, and left some money behind for me. As a kid I always used to wind his watch for him - I've always had a thing for watches, and when he died I asked if I could have his watch. However my uncle took it thinking it was worth something (it wasn't - other than sentimental), so I decided to buy a nice watch with some of the money left to me to remind me of him.

I've had the watch now (my every day watch) for about 5 years now, and have always thought that it isn't waterproof (there are no markings on the watch to indicate otherwise). I even checked on the website, but info is scant on there to say the least, what information they do have is almost impossible to read.

For some reason I decided to contact the makers, and after a few emails I've discovered that it is waterproof. Apparently 'they' don't stamp them with a depth, but they are 'good until you need breathing aparatus'.

So all this time I've spent cleaning the watch carefully with a toothbrush and a bowl of soapy water and I didn't have to!

Oh I'll continue to look after it, but it will be nice not to have to painstakingly clean it once a month with a toothbrush making sure I don't get any water near the case.

Mine gets gunky too Wayne, when I'm weeding, it gets soil in the strap links. I just scrub it in the bath! But it is waterproof. All watches should be waterproof - it should be law!

Did your gunkle sell the watch or did he keep it somewhere?

Dunno - haven't seen him for years.

He has a bit of a reputation in the family - you know how everyone's got one. He's ours.

Shame that - you never know, one day it might find its way back to you.

                            That's not muppetry, it's cautiousness.

It may be your everyday watch but it was bought with money left to you by someone who probably took just as much care of his timepiece.

                              Nice one Wayne
Funnily enough I've always had a thing about proper fob (?) watches, you know the ones that go on the end of a chain...
Not so long ago I was saying to Dad thats Al's one needed fixing, but Al said that if I got it fixed I could have it. Just an everyday one. Dad's reply was that he never realised I liked them, and that he wouldn't get rid of Grandad's old watch, which needed fixing...and as a result of that took it to a jeweler and discovered that it has an unusual movement, not worth huge amounts but a good bit more than the £60ish he thought it was worth. He still says I can have it one day
