  • What is a "Light Supper?"

We have asked our neighbours over to dinner on Thursday, (They have been very good to us) and they said they dont eat much in the evening, could they just come in for a light supper.
Obviously I am not going to say no, but am a bit confused by what is meant by a light supper?? When I was little and stayed with my Gran, supper was usually a small bowl of porridge!!

Could anyone give me some clues as what sort of thing to do, please?

    Do I serve a dessert?

    Thanks for your help

Cold meats and pickles? Then they could choose their own amounts?

Add a potato salad in there as well. Crackers, cheese and a glass of wine possibly?

Why don't you do canapes or savoury and sweet nibbles, Northepaul , then they can pick and choose what they want?
For us a light supper is beans or cheese on toast.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

As the others have suggested, I'd go with nibbly bits as well ..........You could always have some mincepies, or maybe christmas cake if you want something sweet.

oh, definitely nibby bits, although you can end up eating more than if you had a sit down dinner

I'd say that 'light supper' was more than just those little cocktail snacks, but less than a buffet - maybe (say) pizza/quiche slices, cheese straws, tacos & dips. Then maybe something like a few warmed mince pies?

Something simple, for us at home it would be a small bowl of soup and some salad. Or something like a cold meat salad. Nothing in the full scale meal mentions. And yes, desert if you felt like it

I suppose it also means; don't expect us to eat loads as we get bad indigestion!

                        Thanks all for your suggestons,
                        Maybe then:
some salad, (traditional stuff like lettuce, toms etc) home made bread, cheeses (OH got loads for christmas), ham (done myself ), pickles and chutneys (again my own)..??
                        Maybe colslaw?

I have loads of mincemeat left, so could make a mincemeat and apple flan and serve with ice cream??

yum! Shall we all pop round for a light supper? I love coleslaw and ham, all mushed up in the same plate
