  • what does a gardener look like !?

I have been to 2 plant sales in the last month only for someone to ask if I know its a plant sale ! Erm yes thats why i am here to buy plants !

Maybe its because I dont "look" like a gardener :-/

Just because i wear leather & look a bit gothic obviously means I cant grow things lol.

I also get told things like "if you look after it, it will come back next year" !
You dont say ! But I dont here other people being given advice like that :-)

Just look them in the eye and say, "If it doesn't, I'll be back here asking for you."

Might as well have a bit of fun with it, I think!

I think you should be pleased - just because I go to garden centres and discount shops in jeans and a polo shirt does not mean I work in them. One day I am going to serve someone and be their worst nightmare

It would be quite nice if they actually checked I worked there before saying ''I would like......''

Turned up to a plant sale once - turned out to be plant equipment. Those JCBs were SOOOO tempting - i' have been double dug in no time.

Norfolkgrey - I'd be tempted to ask them a whole load of strange questions e.g "what does your soil taste like?" with explanations like "if it tastes of lemon it'll have a low ph, if it tastes of bananas it's high in potassium"

See how many goofy ideas you can inform them of before they twig.

I was asked about a grow tent type greenhouse (similar to the one I have) so I went over pros and cons, design flaws and cheap ways of improving them. They were so impressed they wanted two, and so apologetic when I said I didn't work there.

It happened to me too, Norfolkgrey and Jay-ell. I went shopping across the border in the Czech Republic one day, as people do here when the exchange rate is good, and I went into a big DIY/building supplies/garden centre place that was under new management.

Usually I'm wearing muddy khaki kinds of colours, but those clothes must've all been in the wash, because that day I had on a bright red top and black trousers. So guess what turned out to be the new staff uniform colours? Exactly!

I was thinking of buying a ladder among other things, and I needed to ask about prices and delivery, but I couldn't get any attention from the staff because they thought I was one of them. And the customers kept asking me complicated questions in Czech, which I understand even less well than Slovak So I gave up and went to the supermarket instead.
