  • What to do with old videos?

I thought I'd ask as I know Grapes are a knowledgeable lot...

We have a load of old VCR tapes (between 50 and 60?) and would like to get rid of them, but don't know what to do with them, other than taking them to the tip.

We've tried car-booting them, and brought most back home. People aren't interested. We tried to eBay some of the rarer/collectors edition ones with no joy as well.

Does anyone know what can be done with them (in terms of giving away, recycling etc)??

    Thanks!

Good question. I've got some 300+ VHSs from my old collection. It got so big my step-dad built me two shelves to house them all. Seems such a shame to throw them away.
    Perhaps freecycle?

I've heard they are good as bird scarers tied to your canes.

Why not try your local hospital? The hospital hubby attends take old videos for the patients' TV rooms.

Yep, you could string em across btween two canes. The glittering and the noise they make is supposed to scare pigeons etc.

I'd like to bet we've all got a stash of videos somewhere, I know I have. I have also still got a video player, but I can't remember the last time I used it.

Our local charity shops take them. (That's where ours went recently!)

Snowdrop gave all ours to the Guardroom, together with the machine to play them on

I took a load of ours to a second hand shop a couple of years ago, there were about 60 of them & I think he gave me about £10 for them. I found others in the last year hidden in the loft & took them to a charity shop, I think it was Scope, they still sell them, there are still people who prefer videos & a lot of older people who don't want to buy dvd/bluray etc. You could also always buy a machine which will convert video to dvd. I seem to remember that our DVD recorder can record from a video, you play the video through the TV & record it from there I think, it's then stored in the DVD & you can transfer it to a dvd disc if you want to.

I'd be wary about using them on the allotment. They don't break down and birds can get tangled in them.

Could always strip the magnetic tape out and put the cases through the plastic recycling system.....

.....I have a cupboard full of old StarTrek tapes.....maybe some alien might want them sometime.........
