  • What is it about bread and cheese?

It just works - whatever the weather, whatever country, whatever time of day.

I think I could eat bread and cheese just about anywhere, any time.

Preferably the bread is just baked and crusty and there's a good bottle of red wine to wash it down My mouth is watering at the thought of it.

Had it for lunch - new home-made bread, a good strong cheddar and a dollop of hot (as in spicy) marrow chutney. Wow! Does it for me every time.

And whenever a character in a book eats bread and cheese, you just WANT some. It doesn't happen when they eat other stuff.

                          Ah - bread and cheese:

That's dinner for us tonight - we're waiting on a delivery of gas (someone didn't realise it was nearly gone) - and I can't wait now. Scrumptious.

But cheese on toast? Exactly the same ingredients, but just not the same at all somehow.

Oooh...how I do love cheese on toast. It's what we tend to have if we've been travelling and get back very late, with a lovely glass of red wine.

For me, as HW said of bread and cheese, it's an 'anytime anyplace' thing. I often make Mr R a Tosta Mista for a weekend lunch - I try to live on those in Portugal (and sardines, obviously, but NOT at the same time).
