  • Weird tracks and cracks in garden and lawn

I came home today and noticed someone had dug up our lawn, or so I thought. At first glance I thought maybe a cat had been digging or someone had dragged a chair, it was like a cut right on the edge. But as I looked a noticed a train all around the edge of the lawn, along the flower beds. It looks most similar to an earthquake! The soil is disturbed in a jagged track, but in a way that makes it look like it was from underneath.

We live in a town house with a 4x4m back garden, surrounded by walls and roads on all sides... And with soil only 6" deep on top of hard packed rubble. The track goes nearly all the way round... A length of wood along the lawn edge has been loosened and it even goes into a slightly raised herb bed.

It puts me in mind of the film Tremors but on a much smaller scale! I thought it was a cat or someone pulling a prank but it doesn't seem possible... Surely I can't have a mole in an enclosed garden in the middle of town?!

    Any suggestions?

Sorry for bad photos... It almost looks like someone did weeding all along the edges!

Looks similar... Like someone dragged a sharp stick through the garden.

When do they come out... Should I put the cat in the garden?!

Well I'm not sure if it was a vole or a mole, but I got the little bleeder. It was systematically working it's way around the border of our postage-stamp lawn but I imagine it'll grow back in no time.

That's what I thought, I've never seen one in motion before - only the results. I've also never seen one leave trails before, only mole-hills. Since our soil is only 6" deep on top of some hard-packed rubble (what's that called) I wonder if it was having to skim around on the surface as it couldn't get deep enough?

I actually caught a video of it tunnelling which was pretty cool, it didn't stop as I walked up - again I found that surprising - and walloped the moving bit of soil with a spade.

I couldn't think of a way to catch something which is always underground - I was worried if I didn't take my chance I'd lose a whole day as it ruined my whole lawn - which I only just re-seeded and got looking nice.
Pretty sure it died instantly, which I'm glad about.
