  • Wedding Reception Ideas

    Hi,

Me and the OH would love to get married next year and whilst we have found a venue for the wedding, we are stuck on the reception. We are quite simple folk at heart and our ideal reception would be a marquee in field or barn with a hog roast, some drinks and our closest friends and family.

Does anyone know if this could be possible and if so how? Most venues seem to want to charge a lot for what they offer and there seem to be a lot offering traditional formal receptions but that is not what we want. We are looking for venues in Shropshire, near Shrewsbury.

    Thanks,

    Jojo

Do you know any firendly farmers or landowners who would be willing to let you use a corner of a field? Beyond that I can't be helpful as I don't know that area.

Sounds a lovely, informal relaxed do

I'm not going to give you a where type tip as I live nowhere near you! The big tip is how. The best wedding reception I went to was in the local village hall. It had been decorated in the traditional style with May blossom and trails of ivy and anything else that was blossoming. What was great was that a whole load of people had been given a little task to do that they were glad to do for the happy couple. For example, I was given the task of doing the bride's bouquet in freesias - not a huge expense but was lovely to be asked! So I think if you parcel out the ideas to different friends / family - everyone chipping in with a bit - it becomes more of a community thing which is lovely. Having said that - and it makes me a total liar - I ran away to get married and did it by special licence at the registry office -the party was catered for by Iceland and the theme was lighting as many candles as we could in the garden on a warm July evening! It was magical all the same - that's what weddings do for you!

we didnt live in the village at the time of the last wedding but people are still talking about how much fun it was. Apparently they hired a marquee and put it up in one of the fields; everyone did a bit; it was very simple and no-one had to drive cos everyone put someone up for the night! there are brilliant stories that come out every celebration.......

Thanks for your help. We actually live in Cardiff but to make things easier for my family we are having it in Shrewsbury. I will have to put my thinking cap on...

Well, this is what Google found: Wedding Venues in Shropshire

which is a start, but probably not what you're looking for? I'm guessing you need to ask around for more informal venues. Your family in Shrewsbury would have more ideas of who to ask locally.

Some of my family used to have a farm in Shrewsbury (they farm in Wales now). They did exactly what you describe for their daughter's wedding, field, everyone camping, hog roast etc.

They still know lots of people there with farms/fields and the like and if you get stuck I can ask them who might be amenable to hiring it out.

Bit of a long shot and probably best to try a direct route first, but let me know if you want me to enquire.

Ooh - Jojo - do keep us all updated - I love a nice wedding! In fact I think the vine should have an Announcements thread as well as the General Chitchat!

I watched a programme on really last night, were the groom arranged the wedding including the wedding dress ! , it turned out well, but am not sure he spent his 14k was spent well. A friend of mine was going to mexico to get married, but had to cancel due to the swine flu outbreak so had her wedding at home, hired marquee and a hog roast firm etc, sounds abit naff, but it was fantastic do, traditional church wedding then a great knees up.
