  • warning odd ball phone calls

Just had a phone call, sounded like from overseas,"morning maaam, iam not selling anything",made reference to the the telephone preferece thing we have,i let him get as far as,checking details, like telling ME my post code, after letting him talk,my reply was,not interested due to funny calls,I NEVER gave anything away, mearly put the phone down as i got a strong wiff of rats,
Has anyone else had this one,my reasoning is,in all the years we have been on the system, not one call from them, what on earth do they gain from this,on thinking back,am sure i recognised the same, name, voice from other occations, but different blaggs,i always ask who is calling please,it sounded like he answers to oliver,

When I get cold calls, I don't let them get more than a sentence into their spiel before I ask -can you spell your name for me, please, I need to write it down, thanks, and your supervisor's name? And your manager's? And the company? I don't usually get as far as "company" 'cos by then they've hung up!

Yes, I know what you mean - sometimes I have to apologise to a genuine caller for being a bit abrupt. The telephone preference service doesn't seem to stop the cold callers the way it used to. But I really resent the fact that these people think they can intrude upon my time just as they please, and that I want to talk to a total stranger, who 9 times out of 10, in spite of denials, is sugging.

My one and only response is:
Where did you gt this number from?

          Usually they say 'the screen'.

So I say 'and where did the screen get the number from'

          'the database'

And where did the database get this number from?

          'I don't know'

Well, could you find out please as nobody of that name exists or ever existed here so there's no point wasting your time, is there?

They are getting less and less now that I stick to this one and only script.

Unfortunatly, these calls bring out the worst in me and i can be very rude at times, but once had great fun with a Well known double glazing firm who insisted they could do me a front porch at a great price and deal with all the permisions etc.- so agreed for their rep to call. He was a "bit put out" when he called, only to find my front door opened directly onto the pavement! I asked him how HE liked having his time wasted, and perhaps he could now understand how the rest of us feel with their constant harassing phone calls. Never had a call from them again LOL

I listen to what they say, then pick up on one word and change it.. i had the Computer fix scam tried on me the other week.. He said he was from PC wizzard.. i said, so, you are a magician ... and had great fun asking him what magic tricks he could teach me down the phone... after few mins they soon realise that i am a deaf old barm pot and ring off.
Or............ If i am watching the TV live, i ask the to hold for a second while i sit down then put the phone next to the tv speaker for about 5 mins until they have rung off.

Now, I've just had the Xmas from Hell. Again. Phone calls ignored. Texts ignored. Phone turned off, yada yada yada.

So, long story short: I find myself going thru his inbox while he's unconscious in the spare room. Again.

I find a number that's been listed as "don't answer". Now that gets you suspicious don't it? Why actually go to the trouble of logging this number as "don't answer" ? I mean, it's called him 3 days running, and he's called it back.

So, I runs it through google. My friend.

Turns out to be "a charity", cold-calling.
