Village flower and veg show is getting closer

Gonna have a go again, it was such fun last year with all our mates from the village laughing and joking, helping each other to set up our entries.
They are a lovely crowd in my little village.

Can you give me any tips please, my 'stuff' is typical plot food, so is very much 'warts and all' type veg - hey ho, wont win prizes but will help to fill the stands and will look like the villagers bother with the show, which we do- it's getting better and better with each year that passes!

So come on.... tips please, cant do cheating though.

I've no idea either really as our local flower/veg. show doesn't seem to happen anymore but I'd just make sure everything was well washed & buffed up with a dry cloth so that they shine. Don't people buff onions up with talcum powder or something as well? Good luck with the show, it sounds like it should be fun!
P.S. Have they got a 'honey' class for you? Maybe you could take along a 'bee display' too?

Sorry to mislead - our show is in about 3 weeks, last year was my very first time and was a rush. So thought I would try and get a few early tips- guess the first will be - allow plenty of time! Thanks for your kind replies.
Our village show has almost died, so I have been asking our plot holders to give it a go, all the tips will be passed on, thank you again! It should, with luck be a good year.
We have a Gentleman who grows the most fantastic and huge veg...not so sure what they would cook like. Of course he walks away winning all sections and the 'most points' cups etc. It is lovely to see his veg but it would also be really nice for the plot holders and veg growers of the village to have a chance at a cup or two.
I think there should be a class for 'cooking veg'

          Am I being silly .....?

Should I put this idea to the village show committee as an idea for next year ( too late for this year)

I agree they're should be more classes for "normal" veg!
I know often the competitors for longest/fattest/tallest/most uniform etc..put a lot of time & possibly get a lot of enjoyment from doing so & so it should continue, but the average veg grower nowadays doesn't have time to "show~grow",so yes i think if you want to keep your village show going it would be worth bringing in some different categories.Off the top of my head I can't think of any but will spend the day pondering!!
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

The shows I've been to have an "any other veg" class, for courgettes and the like, so you've more chance at getting a prize I always think than in the very specific class "5 shallots - dressed" type of classes....

We also have 'any other vegetable' and 'a tray of 5 different vegetables' which gives you a chance with things not specifically identified. We also have 'any other fruit' - same thing. I would say, try to make sure the things you exhibit look the same. Might sound obvious, but if it's 6 pea pods, choose 6 the same length. Make sure they aren't past their best - our judges open a pod and taste them! I usually cut them with the little crown of sepals on, if it's peas, leaving a bit of the stalk. Make sure they are clean and polished! With something like 12 raspberries, arrange them in a circle pointy end in, stalk end out - we exhibit on white paper plates. In our case, it isn't always biggest that wins, they do take into account if the veg are over-mature.

Good luck with it - it's a bit of fun after all.
