Veg labels

I have heard of people colour coding their pots and keeping a note in their diary. The colours can be different plant labels or how about buying coloured paperclips and slipping them over the rim of the pot.

I am sure there are other things that could be used depending how many varieties you grow.

Pencil is best to use on white plastic labels though and easy to wipe off to use again.

It happened to me too - even with a "proper" waterproof pen.

Pencil is best. Sandpaper it off and re-use the label.

I did the exact same thing!! will have to wait to see which ones tumble ( tumbling toms ) and which ones are the cherry toms......my chilli's and peppers are easy to sort out... just wait for the fruits!! luckily my cordon toms are in a 4 module tray so i know which ones they are!

I made that mistake too. it depends on the colour, I think. My red felttip disappeared, but the black felttip stayed perfectly visible. This was on home-made plastic labels. I don't think it'd happen on wooden labels, which I'm now using, because wood is slightly porous, so the ink will soak into it a bit.

Would it be usefull to use paper sticky labels on the front of plant pots? I have not done this yet but was going to look for some in the � shop. I also use coloured plastic pegs to clip on the top of pots and wooden ones can be written on.

I used sticky labels on my tomatoes a few weeks ago, what's happened - some little critter - presumably woodlice, I've got thousands of 'em - has munched away at several labels which are now completely obliterated. You can't win!

I colour coordinate and also label, waterproof marker aat Tescos 69p does the job, mind it might have increased in price cos its still working 2 years on lol

On orange plastic plantpots I sometimes use black felt tip pen to write name of plant on side! Works on coffee cup plantpots as well!

After having the sun bleach out the felt tip on my labels, my husband lent me his w/proof golf ball marker (brand name - 'Sharpie) which works a dream - no fade out.

Blue permanent fades, too. I'm just about remembering what was what in the PVC greenhouse, but once they go out into the big world, I think things will need relabelling in black THICK marker!

the best thing iv'e found to write with is a STAEDTLER permanent marker,and a nice fine tip on it,it says on the packet uv ok and several days cap off time,i get mine from wilko's,the price was about �2 aprox,i have used cut up ice cream containers and slats of a blind,and it works exellent,and is definatley water proof.

Read somewhere not too long ago about using aluminum plant labels (made by cutting an aluminum can apart into strips like you would with a yogurt pot, good for recycling those cheap cans of beer used in slug pubs). You write on them with a ball point pen and it leaves an indent that will never fade away. I haven't tried it yet myself, but it sounds like a great idea if you have trouble.

Icecream sticks work a treat! ink soaks right in. OH is a child minder, I get a fair few a week!

craft section of Pound land if you don't have a ready supply like I do...
Polystyene cups that we've collected (for seedlings), I've recycled and black marking pen on them stays well too.
