    Valentine

Not a red rose or a satin Heart

    I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
    It promises light
like the careful undressings of love.

    Here.
It will bind you with tears
    like a lover.
    It will make your reflection
    a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.
Not a cute card or a kissogram.

    I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
    possessive and faithful
    as we are
    as long as we are.

    Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring
    if you like.

    - Carol Ann Duffy.

Well that's different Thea, happy Valentine's Day. Hope you like my one (courtesy of Pam Ayres) and you don't mind the hijack

Won't someone send me a Valentine to make my husband jealous?
Something big and gaudy, altogether over-zealous
Write upon it "Pam, my heart stands still when you walk past ..."
And when my husband sees it, he might notice me at last.

Oh write me something torrid, like "I'm burning with desire!
Meet me in Mustique before me underclothes catch fire!"
My husband will be staggered, he will read it like a book
And think "Well, someone fancies her, I'll have another look!"

Go on, write me something saucy, so my husband will be miffed,
Like "You won't need your pyjamas, if you kind of .. get my drift"
I'll leave it on the mantelpiece and when he rushes through,
He'll read it and then next year he might think to send one too.

        How about this one.

        Sweet Mystery

        For Valentines Day
        My partner, so sweet
        Bought hand made chocolates
        For me as a treat.

        In a flower covered box
        Came the delicious confection
But I am at a loss
        A most curious question...

How can two pounds of chocs
        So delicious on the lips
        Manage in just one night
To put 5lbs on my hips.

          Roses are red
          Violets are blue
          There's nobody better
          So I guess you'll do
