  • Update on our school veg patch

    Hi guys,

A few months ago I posted a thread about the damage done to our school veg patch by mindless thugs. At that point all those of us involved with the project and the children in particular, were dismayed and downcast by such thoughtless antics. As normal, you guys were hugely supportive and helpful and for that you have my grateful thanks.

In total we suffered 3 incidents until, during the Easter break, new security fencing was installed. This had been planned as part of Ofsted requirements and it's timing couldn't have been better. The veg patch and pre-school/reception play area (also a victim of the vandals) are now snug behind the inner sanctum of fencing which surrounds the school building itself and which means that once the inner gates are closed, you can't get in without either the security code or someone within the school itself, pressing the release button - unless you feel like scaling a 6 ft fence that is .

The playground and car-park are also surrounded by shiny new, green fencing with the gates padlocked during school hours and once the caretaker has left for the night.

Sadly, I don't think that the vandals were absolutely identified but there has been a few incidents around the village which has resulted in certain individuals (mainly teenagers I'm sad to say) being highlighted as possible culprits and our Community Police Team have been fantastic.

As for the garden itself, well what can I say other than it has been a resounding success and is successfully growing a good variety of veg - including the artichokes no-one realised were in the ground from last year but have now appeared amongst the parsnips.

The school gardening club got second place in the 'Schools Challenge' in the 'Improving School Grounds' section at the Lincolnshire show last week and had a huge hit (apparently) with their mashed potato and chocolate cake (I really need to get the recipe for that one ) and courgette muffins (now I KNOW they taste delicious coz my little girl made them in cookery class and being a fantastic mummy I tried one ). I have the recipe for the muffins and judging by my courgette plants I'll be using that one a lot.

Well done to all those involved, especially to Mrs R, whose tirelessness and hardwork has achieved so much when others would have thrown up their hands in defeat. Well done you if you're reading this.

    Regards
    Reet
