  • Unusual year is beginning to drive this nutter nuts.

The weather has been unseasonably nice and it's driving me nutty.

I ordered potatoes yesterday but they won't ship until the end of the month. They ship all of their potatoes at the end of March. Doesn't matter when you placed your order.

Finally nice weather but I shouldn't plant anything that can be damaged by frost until around May 10th; 7+ weeks from now. Maybe I'll sneak in some lettuce, radishes, and onions this weekend.

The high temperature yesterday was 71*F.

We sometimes get a frost just after the middle of May, so stuff like tomatoes, peppers, aubergines/egg plants, French beans, squashes, melons, cucumbers and corn can't be planted out until then. But there's quite a lot of stuff that's more hardy and can be sown sooner, apart from the things you've mentioned, DW.

e.g. peas, broad/fava beans, carrots, parsnips, parsley and root parsley, leeks, turnips, lots of brassicas like cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and kohl rabi.

The temperatures are still dipping into the 20's F at night with highs typically in the 40's F. Seems like I'm wasting some nice days in the 60's. Your list is encouraging. I didn't know there was quite that variety of plants that would do okay this time of year.

      Thank you.

I don't know exactly what will work for you, DW, because I'm not familiar with your particular growing conditions. But it's worth experimenting with a few cheap packets of the hardier types of veggies. Also using cloches or row cover to warm up the soil can speed things up a bit.
