Last night somehow the village of Gurney Slade came into the conversation.
Does anybody know of any more unusual or rude place names.?

Elder son went to his friends birthday party in Spittal on Saturday - I know it isn't rude but my two lads were wondering if the name had anything to do with spit until I explained the spelling difference.

When I worked for an agricultural suppliers on the Island, we had a regular pick up from a place called Upper Dicker! And, yes, there was a Lower Dicker.

My local village is called Knott End, which gets changed into something rather rude most of the time...

When driving through Northumberland, you may come across the village of Once Brewed.

A bit further down is the village of Twice Brewed. You couldn't make that up!!

Then there are Slack Top and Slack Bottom just above Hebden Bridge. Super Alpine nursery there too!


Sadly Peover is actually pronounced Peever so the effect is lost in conversation.

This is a bit like pronouncing Somercotes (Derbys) as So-mer-coatees, or Morecombe as Murray-combie

I believe you. My aunt used to live near them and I remember lookin twice just to check my eyes saw it right!

Theres a Six Mile Bottom near me.

Place in Essex called Wendons Ambo ........

and all the Muckings of course.

And in France there is B e r b i g u i e r e s ..........

Don't know what it means but it's difficult to type and it's where I live but after Essex it's a right bugger.

I just like the resonant sounding places near me which, thanks to the Norse, have left us with names like Torngumbald, Nunburnholme, Wetwang, Fridaythorpe, Kirby Grindalythe, Thwing and Thixendale. All beautiful places in the much forgotten East Riding of Yorkshire.
