Potato, I'm sure we eat this more than any other country.

The reason I said potato, was I think its the one veg its virtually impossible to over cook. A task my parents managed admirably with all other veg as a kid.

Well, its leek in wales, potato in ireland...what about scotland and england?

I think of blackberries, or apples. But they aren't veggies. So vegwise, I'd say tatties too.

Well, we are a bit selfish to be honest, we do indeed have the leek, but we also have the welsh onion, or shiboons, as my OH calls them.

We have no problem with smelly breath.

I'm going with peas, you can eat them with almost every meal.

I'll second peas. When you look back through the last couple of centuries there have been some fabulously named peas. Even earlier, they were grown as field peas, harvested for drying. The mushy pea is a very old English tradition.

However, my vote is for the pea called Champion of England!

As the only child in history to have ever actually LOVED "school cabbage" (with gravy) I'm going to vote for Savoy Cabbage -closely followed by peas because as Flum has already said they go back into the mists of time as a staple English food. A vital ingredients in your "Mess of Pottage"!
