| A TrackBack is usually used on a blog where someone else has cross referenced the blog entry (e.g. from their blog). I think there is a means by which you can get notification if an article which is the target of a trackback is updated. Just a means of generating traffic, and bumping up the number of links between sites, most probably in the hope that Google will rank your site more highly. I think they just get in the way of useful comments from people ![]() Tags are "keywords" associated with articles, or a site as a whole. "Top Tags" are often shown somewhere on the site, or page, with larger fonts for the more popular / relevant words. Supposedly Google will give higher ranking to things in larger fonts - which it did do historically for Headings on a page and so on. There are often fields for Joe Public to enter Tags - a means of getting the tagging done for free! I presume that words that are entered by numerous punters are analysed so that the most frequently re-occurring are actually used on the site. | I think, tags are the keywords with the search uses. If you enter your keywords into the box, it helps the search find more relevent results for you and order the with the more relivant first. e.g. if you happen the mention carrots in the topic about apple trees then the apple tree topic will come up in a search for carrots. but if you tag the topic as carrots them in theory it should come up higher in the search list.

| A trackback is used for when you add links to a topic. When you link another webpage, blog, etc, the forum lets the other website know there is a link to it. At least that is how I understand it. I could be very very wrong, it is not unheard of. J

| Thanks James, what I don't understand is why you would want to when posting on a topic thread etc. I could see the benefit of linking something you have written to say a blog, as long as it could be done by amending a previous post. But, tags, why put tags into your question, its a forum, and I am asking the question of other users on the forum rather than the general public at large. So I don't see the benefit of adding tags to my post, am I being dull, or is it just beneficial for the site rather than the individual?

| Hi Mikey I don't think adding tags in your post benefits you much, as you know what you have asked, answered, etc. I more is for other people who search the forum to see if someone else has asked their question before asking it. I do not know how many people use the search function, but I use it quite often as I am still in my first year of GYO and have a hundred questions everytime I come back from my plot. Hope this helps J

| Ok, but how do you know what other are searching for, and quite often the threads digress from a topic but has very useful info in the middle. How do you ensure that any of that info becomes useful to others, when they wouldn't have been tagged in the topic!?

| You see you got me there. I think it is for the general topic of the thread. It is not for exact searches, but just helps us along our way. I would never get into specifics with tags, but just the general idea of of the original posting. Having said all this, I do cast my eye over all the new posts made each day and see what everyone else is chatting about. J
