  • Touch pad trauma

Does anyone know how to change the sensivity of the touch pad on a lappy?
This one is driving me nuts as I touch type, and each time either of my palm heels (you know the area I'm talking about) goes within about a kilometre of the touch pad, the cursor changes position, or the page closes or something equally frustrating happens.
Please help, its sending me banana's.

I've had a lappy like that. Sorry Bob I don't know how to change it although it may be possible via the control panel. The only way round I found was to plug in a usb mouse and keyboard and use them rather than the lappy keyboard.
I totally empathise though. It is seriously frustrating

Sorry, mine's not too sensitive so I haven't had to find out!

If it wasnt for the fact that its taken over a year to get a new lappy for this position, the large hammer would indeed be the option.
I know it MUST be on control panel somewhere, but Mr W Gates I truly am not.

        Frustrating?? Nah not much

Sadly I work for a multi national oil company, using cutting edge technology, so I am still on Windows 98.
              Any ideas?

                      On reflection,
I don't know which oil company you work for but if it is like my company your laptop may be locked down in which case you may not be able to change it yourself.
I can't change the time on mine for example
If this is the case then your best option is to call the company IT helpdesk ( they should work 24/7) and they will be able to take over your laptop as an administrator and do it for you whilst you enjoy a coffee in the sun if you have any

My computer is locked on certain things, but individual settings are available to be changed.
Tbh I wouldnt phone the help desk in Dubai for something this trivial without first exploring all other avenues.
I've been back in post 4 days now and already called them 3 times for various problems, someone's going to be thinking I have a laydee friend in Dubai I call it so often.

Oh, and plenty of sun, but no bloody coffee cos its Ramadan!!

How can I change the speed of my mouse in Windows?
if this doesnt work convince your laptop to jump off your desk so IT department give you a newer machine, just remember to tell the laptop he won't be going to Silicon Heaven

                            Bob, Madmax here. 2 solutions:
                            1) Buy a mouse - but this doesn't stop the sensitivity issue, but as I recall Win 98 has a facility where you can shut down the touchpad if a 'rat' is pugged in.

In start/settings/control panel/system/device manager/mice and other pointing devices (if I remember correctly) you will be able to disable the touchpad (PS/2 compatible mouse) and then you can use the mouse you bought/stole/misappropriated that you plugged in. Hope this don't mess things up for ya! Good luck! If Dell Quick Set (QS) is installed there should be settings in this to change mouse/touchpad sensitivity.

A Dell D630... on Win 98!?!?! Are they taking the p155??? Orange gave me one of those.

If that don't work - open it up and pull the plug on it!

Personally I think some of our stuff is locked simply to keep the helpdesk in work. After all we can't go round having IT savvy people able to do things for themselves can we. A certain level of dependance on other departments is good for you!
Shame about the coffee though. TBH most times I ring it ends up being escalated to 2nd line. They couldn't work out how I got my machine to keep running so long with a dodgy motherboard and disc drive
