  • Tonights Wartime Farm.

Did anyone watch tonights episode of Wartime Farm?
During the war, school kids were allowed to work on the farms, especially at harvest time and tonight, they had a whole host of kids to help with the haymaking. It reminded me very much of the time when I was the cub master of the village pack.
I was struggling to get a contractor in to turn the hay that summer, so on this particular cub night, I got about twenty cubs to play in the hay and turn it in the process. What didn't happen on tonights episode of Wartime Farm, is that two of their kids didn't come down with severe hay fever.

Hope you gave them bread and honey as a reward afterwards? Plus the 6 pence an hour.

I've been a bit disappointed with it, but last night's episode was the best one I've seen. Ruth with make up, what a revelation!

I agree, IMO, in general, this series hasn't been up to the standard of the three previous ones. This one has been made for the OU and I'm pretty sure that the earlier ones weren't. Maybe this has had something to do with the disparity. This series seems very contrived, where as the others came across very naturally.

Ruth spent most of last nights programme walking through cow poop and plop in shoes, surely wellies had been invented by the time of World War 2 ?

Most likely the rubber was used for war materials - ground sheets for soldiers tents, life belts for the ships, gas masks for everyone, tyres for military vehicles - I know tyres were rationed on the home front. Rubber came from SE Asia, and that was a war zone.
              Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
              Endless wonder.

I tend to agree with everyone - hope this doesnt sounds silly, but I dont find this series as authentic as the previous ones - I dont get the impression that they are actually 'living' the life so much...?

I think you've hit the nail on the head CM. It's being presented as an educational package in conjunction with the OU and it seems to be lacking in entertainment value.

There was stacks of humour in The Edwardian Farm.

I took lots of photos when I visited Morwelham Quay the other summer but see that we are restricted to only four photos per post. Is there anyway that I can show folks the lot all in one go?

You could create an Album for your photos on your Profile and put a link to it in your post.

My 10-year old granddaughter tells me she thinks the series is brilliant, so maybe it is aimed at being educational this time.

It's been interesting so far - certainly has made me think a bit more about what life was like for my grandparents anyway.
It explains why my gran had such an excellent vegetable garden and was really into recycling and reusing things.

                            But where are the out-takes.................

I agree, its a little bit like dressing up for the part but not actually living the part 24/7.

It is educational though I suppose.

If the archeoligists get it wrong its "Well that didn't work very well, did it" whereas if the farmers got it wrong in the 40's they either starved or got there farm took off them by the government!

You've got it Snadge - I was surprised to hear in one of the episodes that one of the farmers was killed in a shoot out because he wasn't prepared to co-operate. I wouldn't have thought that could happen in this country.
