  • Tonight's night sky...now!

I've just been looking to the low horizon facing south, and there are 5 planets all lined up diagonally!
Not often you see them so close

Directly above South is Uranus, then dropping down to the West a bit , but very close, are Neptune,Mars,Venus and Mercury !
All quite low on the horizon....

Take a look if you can cos they'll be moving.

    Fantastic!!!!!

To the right of Orion's belt apparently. Should be a bluish/greenish thing in the sky, clearly visible with binoculars. I heard about it on the radio today.

            Salient point:

Observers with binoculars and small telescopes should seek out a safe location that’s preferably free of urban light pollution, where the Moon can be obscured by a wall or building, with an unobstructed view of the southern horizon. The best time to observe in the UK is between 8 and 10 pm GMT when the comet will be highest above the horizon. Since the comet is almost on the celestial equator tonight, you should look about 20° (roughly four binocular fields, or the span of an outstretched hand at arm’s length) to the right of Orion’s Belt to stand a good chance of viewing the diffuse, greenish puffball glow of C/2014 Q2.

Hope you can see it, as I said, cloudy here but I'll have another look tomorrow.

If you put your location into Heavens-Above it will give you a Star Map, or a comet map (click on Comets and then from the list choose the one you want by clicking on that to see a Star Map).

For those not familar with Star Maps they have East and West reversed - the idea being that if you print it out and hold it above your head they will be the right way round

Heaves Above will also show Iridium flares from your location; they can be very bright (up to about -8), but are short lived (30 seconds) so make sure you know where in the sky to look and that your watch has the correct time!

Can't link a pic for some reason but this will take you to my flickr page . I managed to get an image of Comet Lovejoy just before Christmas . If you look just to the right of the statue you will see a "fuzzy star" - just off the prow of the boat - thats the comet .

If I could get clear skies I'd be out trying to get it again .
