  • Tocillitus (again!), Central Heating Problems and Money (or lack of it) :(

Have toncillitus again! Will be pestering both GP and Consultant to find out who will actualy do the follow up Auto-immune test today, as GP said the Consultant will do it but out of all tests requested by Consultant I cannot see that as being one of them. Also GP has noted "No action" against results of my thyroid function which it is at the same level as back in January yet I am on a higher dose of medicine now!

When I rang my Mum yesterday and told her I had the dreaded T again she straight away said she had clipped an article out of the paper. Apparently it states that Doctors advise heating to be at a constant range of 18 to 23 (think thats right?) in order to avoid getting coughs (kids always have one of these on the go, colds and TONCILLITUS. Well DH says we are struggling already to pay the HUGE elec and gas bills yet we only have the heating on for 2 hours between 6:30pm and 8:30pm and in the morning for 1 1/2 hours.

DH says that we cannot afford to replace central heating yet which dates from when the house was built in the 60s (which I agree) and wont borrow off my Dad. He says that in order for heating to be on all the time the water would be on all the time too???? I do know that if heating is on for extra time then the water becomes scorching hot, which I think is dangerous for the kids. Also I am having terrible trouble keeping up with washing at mo cos its taking soooo long to dry, so we are constantly in a damp atmoshphere. That must be bad for me (especialy if I do have this auto immune disease) and the kids.

I asked if we could afford to stay and DH said we couldnt afford to move! I hadnt realised things were that bad although know DH always exagerates like my Dad about money (always some tucked away somewhere) but asked if I would have to go back to work in Jan and he said maybe. I really dont want to but will if its really needed. Luckily DH is quite old fashioned (lucky me eh!) so I know he will avoid at all costs. I said we need to become even more self sufficient and said we MUST cust down the shrub that shade part of the veggie plot which would also give us more light yet he wont hear of it.

Has anyone any ideas on any of the waffle above? - not checked as its school run time again - back later!

Oh Tammy you are having a bad time of it. I am no expert about anything but I agree its not good to be in a damp atmosphere, if you can try and put the washing somewhere else, do you have a spare room you could use for that or a garage. If your heating is very old it may be costing you more to run it. Are you getting all the financial help you are entitled to, prehaps a visit to your local CAB would help. It may be that there is something in your area to help with heating as you have little one's and you are constantly Ill.
    Keep you spirits up.

      Tonsillitis
is caused by infection by a variety of different micro-organisms... can be bacterial or viral.

I used really suffer from coughs and colds when I lived in an under-heated, damp house. Now that I live with Mr Sheds, the house isn't damp and my health is much better (I have a really bad cold at the mo, but it's my first all year. I do suffer because I had my tonsils and my lymph glands removed, so no first line of defence against the bugs.. I get everything going).

I won't waste gas though: I only put the CH on when the sun goes down, for a few hours until just before bedtime. I wear jumpers, thick socks and sometimes a hat or a blankie indoors if I'm cold. Eating hot food really helps too... soups etc.

      Best of luck x

If you are on certain benefits like tax credits you may be able to get grants to improve your heating situation (New boiler, radiators etc). The information is on the net - search for home improvement grants etc. You may or may not qualify but it is always worth checking these things out

ahhhhhhh see wot you need to do is chuck him out, get on income support, get the stuff done then let him back home ........ can't say much really, just hugsssssss ...... keep plodding along, things as they say ..... can only get better xxxxxxx

oh and there should be a thermostat on your boiler/ tank/ whatever, so you can turn the temp down, and actually keeping the heating on all the time makes the bugs breed, so actually you're better off without it ...... but if the place is damp, with the washing then you're in a vicious circle

i have my central heating on ALL DAY

thermostat is set at 68, so it only comes on when the temp drops below that, and only goes UP maybe late in the evening on a below freezing night, it gets turned down to 10 at night when i go to bed, and back up to 68 when i get up.

I find this saves me heaps on my gas bill, as I am not having to heat a cold house.
being the middle of a terrace helps as well.

the kids and i do get coughs when the central heating first gets put back on end of september, but this is mostly due to the air being dried out, always use bowls of water near them to put the moiture back in the air ( or spritz a few times a day)

i've lived here 4 years, and had the heating on no more than 6 times lol ..... can't get into it at all, never had it growing up ..... still prefer a blankie and extra jumpers ....... that and having a card meter, so i can see exactly hom much each minute costs

                      Hugs for you xxx

I started getting tonsylitis several times a year. It only started when I was stressed and going through a divorce, then I got it loads.

I had them out and although it was the worst fortnight of my life after (could have cut my own head off if the kitchen knives had been sharp enough lol) I have never had a throat problem since. That was 4 1/2 years ago. ( I have to say it wasn't just the operation that made me so ill, I discovered a few days after I was pregnant and should't even have been operated on! and so had to stop all medication except smarties, oops I mean paracetamol.)

Sorry to hear you are under the weather Finedon. Dandy. If your central heating boiler really is from the 1960s you may be able to save on heating costs by replaceing it with a more efficient modern one. I know that doesn't help pay for the boiler but over the years it would pay for itself.

Can you get a grant or something to help replace it? I know my nan got something similar to put a loo upstairs but that may have been cos she is ancient! It was through the local housing people (nan owns hers so not anything to do with renting)

Well yes I know that! But it worked on a needy basis, so your need would be your recurring illness and the fact that you have little children around.
