  • Tinned tomatoes - a health risk?

Anyone heard this about tinned tomatoes?

The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people's body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals. "You can get 50 mcg of BPA per liter out of a tomato can, and that's a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young," says vom Saal. "I won't go near canned tomatoes."

The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings). You can also get several types in Tetra Pak boxes.

This came from an endocrinologist quoted on Fox News (who I wouldn't necessarily rate as a reliable source). Wondered if anyone else had seen anything about this anywhere?

We eat a lot of tinned tomatoes, as I've never yet managed to grow the quantity that we eat...

He's been saying that for a couple of years now, but no-one seems to be paying attention.

IMO The American authorities would have jumped all over it if they felt there really was much of a risk, they tend to be much quicker at banning risky things than we do.

My passata is still going strong and after reading this I am doubling up my sowing efforts. I think the garden can take a polytunnel. I want to try drying some this year as in sun drying...
Any particular brands although you would think that stands the same for a lot of tinned food.

I thought it was only damaged tins....I must admit to avoiding the dented ones, even if they are on special offer....if it's the case with all, then I'd prefer to be oblivious

Not heard of this, but don't use them very often. I will pass on for my daughter to consider, like you Sarz they use loads. I can't seem to grow enough to keep them going and failed miserably this year anyway.

See, I am shocked that tins are used. When a tin is dented, surely the lining could be damaged? I've long not bought damaged tins, and really not that keen on using tinned stuff full stop. Another reason to GYO.

We don't eat that many tins of tomatoes are currently eating home preserved jars of passata which I made last autumn but that won't last much longer. Added to which there is a lining on the metal lids anyway but suppose that's not in contact with the tomato very much. If you really want to depress yourself then google on this, it's not nice although some of it is probably over egged.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Yes, I have seen reports going back to 1995 and there are a few that could be described as "sensational".

Our bottled and frozen ones are all gone now unfortunately. I think we'll have to switch over to tetrapacks for the ones we buy now, and I'll have to redouble my efforts to grow them this year. Should be getting a tunnel in May, hopefully, so that should double my capacity

I didn't Google Alison, I'm struggling not to be depressed with the state of the world as it is

Thanks for the warning! I too hadn't heard about it.
My supply of toms from 2010 has now all gone- and I had absolutely nothing in 2011 because of blight ( 34 plants ruined!) so I've had to buy tins in. Will certainly buy glass bottles or tetrapacks from now on!
                          Thanks

I don't use that many but I do use tinned tomatoes. I will not buy any mroe after the last lot are used up. Have been buying the ones in the tetra paks for a while but occassionally did buy tinned one. Now I will be careful. Anyway, another reason not to buy tins.

I don't like tins anyway, they need cupboard space!
