  • those amazing slugs

where I used to live was hot and dry, so slugs really weren't a problem.

I rapidly discovered they were here, I treat my growing area 3 times a year with nematodes, with judicial use of pellets this has limited them to a nuisance but not devastating.

then this morning I went back to a pot I had left upside down on the lawn for a couple of days while I got around to preparing the potting mix.

righted the empty pot and found not one or two slugs, but EIGHTEEN !!!!
I must have been a very naughty boy in a previous life.

Now I have seen that you can grow your own nematodes.

Gather all the slugs and drown them in a bucket, apparently about 1 in 25 is infected with nematodes (the hunch back shaped ones usually). Since your area has been reqularly treated I suspect you have a few. Keep gathering them for a couple or three weeks and steeping them in the bucket. Leave another week or two. Now you have a concentrate on nematodes. filter, dilute and apply to the growing areas. Repeat the cycle at no extra cost and away you go.

I suggest you search online for a proper guide from a more seasoned practitioner than I.

Last night there were only 2 on the ground but the other 7 were either clinging onto the walls or upside down underneath the guttering.

If that's the case then I must have done something truly terrible in every single one of an infinite amount of previous lives to deserve the quantity I've had this year - hundreds in one night
          Another happy Nutter...

Me too - if you add the slugs and snails together I must have reached at least a 1000 - and they're the ones I've found. The slugs have been so massive that I'm now relieved when I find a little one!

Totally totally done with slugs this year - will hope for a better year next year!

Not sure why you just don't eat them, taste a bit fishy and they slip down a treat.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

There was a warning about lungworm being found in dogs, where they've just been eating the grass that hold the slime. I think it was on our regional news yesterday. If there was more birds we'd have better pest control.
When you put slugs & snails in a bucket of water they climb out again,I have to add salt. Making your own nematodes must really smell,I don't know if I'd want to spread the slug gunge around my plants?
