  • Sympathy required!!

Ice skating bad for you. Fact!

Tried an arabesque, showing off with a friend. That worked, so did another, which was my downfall. Literally.

I am no longer a fracture virgin, having broken the top of the radius (the bigger forearm bone) clean off. The accident was Saturday, but the medics at the rink said it wasn't broken and to go to A and E yesterday if I was worried. So, I took anti-inflammatories, wore a tubigrip and ice pack and carried on the evening with my friends. Still wasn;t happy with the swell pattern yesterday, hence the trip to hospital.

    I have proven two things:

    1) Northerners really are hard. Fancy spending an evening with friends with a broken arm!

    2) Entomox (or wotever it's called) definitely blocks neuro-receptors right before consciousness is lost. Just. Manipulation is evil!!

I was planning to dig over my new plot, yesterday, but that can't hppen until Spring! My PhD is also on hold as far as lab goes, but I can type with the left hand so will work on my Intro to the thesis! I did have a lovely walk today, so not all bad, and afternoon nap with the kitties was divine!

Tomorrow's exciting adventure? Furtling to get up the last of the spuds which moved with me, so not ALL gardening is on hold!!

Reminds me of something. Only it wasn't ice skating but riding a bike.

OK- major sympathy here from me!!!!
Yup - I used to ice-skate three times a week for about four years ( not that you'd guess by looking at me!!!!!)

and yes- I finally gained my Novice exam in dancing but had to stop there.
Fear of falling and breaking something REALLY hindered my abilities.
Put me on a horse and I'd do anything totally stupid!!!!

                Conclusion???

Ice doesn't bounce- soil does! ( well- a bit! )

                Don't be put off ice-skating- it's a wonderful activity!
Do you have proper dancing/freestyle boots - or hockey boots?
It depends on the blades what you can ultimately achieve!

wishing you a speedy recovery ( well- till just after Xmas so you can get out of all the washing up and cooking!!!!!)

Have you got a relief slug -hurler ?
I'd say it wasn't a n ice thing to have happen, but I think I'd be skating on thin ice...

There's always a positive side to every disaster. Think how lucky you are that it happened this time of year when there's not too much you can do in the garden. Having broken my wrist about this time of year a few years ago, I do sympathise, honest!!

I remember breaking the upper pole of my right scaphoid(query spelling) when I slipped running for a bus at the tender age of 16. Spent part of the following night with my hand on top of the wardrobe to try to ease the pain before being chased to A&E. Hard? nope I was young and ignorant . Anyway, I'm not saying you are either and just trying to stress that I can relate to the pain and that I really sympathise. On our plots we would be getting a task force together to help out. I hope you can call on that sort of help locally.

Thanks all. I am looking at all the positives. It does screw up plans a little, in that I can't collect my Mum on the 23rd (she has a broken leg!!), so need to work that out somehow, but I can do most things one-handed. There's no way I'm letting someone else cook Christmas dinner. MIL is an awful cook, bless her, as is my own Mum, so OH is recruited for veg chopping/peeling and I'll manage the rest, with help for turkey maneouvres, ha ha!

I'm also forced to slow down a lot. I took the loss of my job really badly and with that, house move and refurb, plus two stress-related car accidents, I was getting close to a breakdown!

In addition, I feel a teeny bit smug, lol! I was laughed at as a kid for writing/doing other stuff with my left hand sometimes in case I ever broke my right arm! Who's laughing, now? I realised last night that my left hand is still more legible and neat than OH's normal writing!!

Yes, it is lucky that it's this time of year. Not just for the garden (I literally just wanted to dig fresh turf and save the job in Spring), but the Uni shuts down for nearly 3 weeks in December, so I'm only taking 3 weeks sick and I didn't have any experiments running, being less than 2 months into the PhD. Only downer is that this is my favourite time of year for riding. Give me three weeks though and I'll be norty and get on riding with one hand!! sHHH!
