Anyone catch the new Beeb serial tonight? Also does anyone remember the original one in the 70's?

I quite like the new one so far - waiting to see what kind of a bad guy Tom Price is going to develop into.

    Yes.
    &
    Yes.

Has got going a lot quicker, only 6 episodes, rather than the 38 the original finally ran to.

The opening credits are not half as scary as the original and the original music was better.

The acting is way way better.

Abby was a useless prig last time round, seemed more human this time.
Price the welsh tramp was just annoying, comedic almost, whereas this one is menacing.

    Verdict wait for developments.

      Non et non.

But I have seen 28 days later, and I Am Legend. Both similar premises.

I love a good catastrophe drama, there was a good moment when it was said about 'do you know how to grow veg', that allowed me to (smugly) say 'I'd be alright then'....may be smothered by irritated OH before the series ends...

The basic story has been done and done - it's a bit like Stand (book , don't know if it's ever been filmed) and The Day of the Triffids). However, I'm a sucker for a Sci-fi. I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it. I like the double menace of Price, violent robber type and the hint of sexual predator - unless I missed it I don't think it was actually said what he had been convicted of, but the hatred of the prison guard hinted that it was far more than a simple robbery.

I also really enjoyed the double act of the rich kid and the little kid - nice to get a bit of humour in.

And what a lovely way to audition possible Dr. Whos

I vaguely remember the 70's series - can remember i found it fairly frightening...but there has been so much doom stuff since.....a little blase perhaps....also felt smug when they did the do you know how to grow veg? bit...i'm looking forward to how they manage self sufficiency more than whether they have sex/kill each other......although that will be interesting too...only 6 episodes? How are they going to manage anything worth watching in 6 episodes........

The original series in the 70's was apparently based on a book by Terry Nation (of Dr Who and Dalek fame) but you are right the apocalyptic end of the world scenario stuff has been around a long time. One point about Tom Price - in the original he was a Welsh tramp who raped and murdered a young woman so there is potential in the new version for something very nasty.
As a SF reader and con goer I have cut my teeth on this kind of stuff. At one point (when the lady doctor was considering suicide after she realised nearly everyone else was dead) I was shouting at the TV "don't be so selfish" because in that kind of scenario you would obviously need skilled people like her.
At another point I cheered the character of Greg when be broke into the Camping supplies store because that was what I'd been ranting on about for the previous 2o minutes - not the b and e but the getting out of town into the countryside plan.
As you can probably guess I need to get out more and stop thinking about depressing stuff like this!

I remember the original version vividly, always regretted that it hadn't been re-shown, so I am loving this version.
I get the impression in this one Tom Price is an armed bank robber, hence the money and gun.
as far as the rest goes, i yelled at the doctor too, I also wondered how longit would takle for someone to hit the camping shop and head for the hills, sad person that i am , I have had my escape strategy planned for decades
lovin rich kid and lil kid too.

That line got me tickled me as well but somehow I dont think it'll turn into a post-apocalyptic gardening programme.

Did we see any animals, apart from barking dog in car? Can't help thinking there would be mobs of dogs/cats/cows/horses wandering about by now, unless..... unless... is this one of those goes from one species to another type flues - like the bird flu that never was.

Oh dear, analysis getting too deep now, just lie back and enjoy. But I am annoyed that it is not to be shown on a Sunday anymore - it fell just right after Strictly!

Yes it has, stars Rob Lowe, Gary Sinese, and girl from Pretty in Pink.
Stephen King does a Hitchcock style appearance third of the way into the film.
