  • To subscribe or not?

This is a general thread about whether it is always cost effective and in the best interest to subscribe to any magazine publication.

What started me thinking was this.....

...Friday in a supermarket that has ***** letters in its name I cam across another gardening/cooking publication aimed at veg growers with just ** letters in its abbreviated title. This particular edition had 5 free packets of seeds attached (including the now traditional boltardy beetroot!!) and the cover exclaimed this was an offer exclusive to *****.

On returning home I checked that mags website to discover that if I had been a subscriber I could have had the 5 packets of seed but would have had to pay P&P to get them.

OK, subscribers may have got the year's issues cheaper but I don't buy all the issues - normally being guided by content - so my question is this - Is it better to subscribe or to pick and choose issues (and in this case where you buy them from)?

And yes I did Buy that particular issue

I cant buy english magazines here so if i want them i have to subscribe.....in fact i only subscribe to Grow Your Own and to a Writing periodical and wait for visits to engerland to pick up odd copies of other mags (knitting, cross stitch, gardening). The frustrating thing is tho is that i'm not eligible to take part in any of the freebie offers or competitions which i think is mean.I get free seeds tho cos they come packed up with the mag.....if i lived in engerland i probably wouldnt subscribe but would still buy on a regular basis.

Can you not enter on-line or are they restricted to UK entries only?

Perhaps we should set up a recycling scheme to send overseas friends mags for the cost of the postage once we have finished with them?
