Default Stanstead - should it expand?

Hi Johnty here!

Is anyone else fuming at the duplicity of the government? They lecture us about not producing so much CO2 and yet are so limp when it comes to taking positive action to cut down the nations CO2 like not allowing any further air traffic expansion at Stanstead.

Poor Mr Milliband, caught in a cleft stick, his conscience and the business lobby. I wonder who will make the decision for him, consumer demand or a public enquiry. I wonder... now who is it that votes consumers or atendees at enquiries.

I wish we had a govt with backbone and moral fortitude, not just a lecturing tone.

Ah well, as we all know the consumer is always right, it's a moral certainty that those that DEMAND 3 foreign holidays a year have the right so to do.

Sheesh.

I'm going for a lie down, doctor's orders. Got to get my blood pressure down.

Jonty, watch your blood pressure - I know exactly how you feel, though.

its not always as simple as that. through very strange circumstances ALL of my family live abroad and I see them each - mum, dad and brother (all in differnt places) once a year. I don't have holidays as such, just hopefully visit my family . it is really easy to assume that everyone who travels is just on a jolly, but that isn't the case. I have to fly for work about twice a year and apart from that I only fly to see my family... I would LOVE to have family in the same country because it gets really lonely without them, but I don't, so I fly to see them. I am a nurse and don't make a lot of cash so I am not a rich person jetting off around the globe. Cheap flights have meant that I can actually see my family a bit more which means the world to me.

just a different perspective, that is all.

I believe the expansion is in the market for more frequent foreign holidays.

You utter utter swine !

Don't you have any sensitivity to where your fellow grapes live?

Here I was trying to ignore the planes zooming by, the Ryanair Stewardesses trotting round Sainsbury's, the interruption to my satellite TV when they fly a bit too low and you go and remind me on GYO, where I go to get away from it, that I'm living a couple of miles away from the biggest aviation white elephant about to be created in decades.

Full use of the current runway I can live with, it's there and people want to fly and fuel is affordable at the moment.

Expansion to two or four runways, no way!

I would love to know the carbon emission rating of the construction, total rating for creating and putting in place all the materials. Then factor in rising fuel price, sinking ful reserves and run the graph, when will mass air trasport become un-economic? That's when it will decline and we will be left with a massive white elephant, which some bugger will decide can be turned into a housing development, 'cos it's "brownfield right?".

Now if a similar economic input was targetted at UK railways with improved links to the continent, there is a logical and rational, lasting investment in our future. Railways can be run on electricity form any source and use little energey per passenger mile. O sorry, off on a different planet for a moment there.............

I find it incredibly ironic that the new Heathrow terminal is being billed as 'environmentally sensitive', while the increase in air traffic as a result of the expansion will have far huger impacts on the environment than could ever be mitigated by a eco-sustainable building. It's like chopping someone's leg off and giving them a pat on the back and a plaster to make it better.

"Environmentally sensitive" means what exactly? The spin-meisters have been at work. It's a lie.
