  • Sprouting Beans!

    Wasn't really sure where to post this...so figured I couldn't go wrong with GC...if I am,please move mods!!(not you,the thread!)
Well,I just got a bag of kidney beans out of the freezer(from last year)& loads of them have sprouted!!!...also the rest of them have got a bit of a funny smell to them,so they've been slung in the compost.
So is it common for frozen beans to sprout whilst in the freezer???
I hold out minimal hope for success, but I'm going to plant them, just to see what happens!

Have you checked the rest of the contents of the freezer?! Is it working properly? Or has it been accidentally turned off at some point? I didn't think stuff that was frozen had a smell....

Aye, what Sarah said. It doesn't sound quite right.

Pretty sure things are not supposed to sprout when frozen! Which would indicate that at some point they werent frozen so as Sarz said, check the freezer!

Was so not hoping for(although half expecting)that!Everything still is frozen & I really can't see why/how it would have ever defrosted unless there's something big wrong with the freezer...although I've never gotten anything out that isn't frozen.
The others didn't smell weird until I boiled them...they were to be added to the pumpkin curry that was taken out at the same time...now eaten!
So do you think any meat in there should be deemed unsafe?...I promised Daisy Rabbit Pie for tea tomorrow...although I hate to go back on a promise,I would quite obviously hate more to poison my children with their favourite foods!
Think I may just dry my beans this year!

Perhaps your freezer temperature is too warm?

Then that's just plain weird innit? If they didn't smell til you boiled them, then that would seem that they've defrosted and refrozen? I'd be inclined to check everything before you cook it, just to be on the safe side; it might just be something weird with the beans and everything else is fine, but... if more stuff smells weird when defrosted then I'd guess your freezer has defrosted at some point...?

What SORT of freezer? It isn't one of those fridge-freezers that only have one compressor and swith off the frezzing bit if the temperature of the room goes below 10 degrees is it? We've got one, and can only use the freezer section in the summer!
