  • Spring equinox

My 7 yr old has shown me a power point he produced for school today. It explained that: today is the equinox and the night is as long as the day and in the Southern hemisphere it is the autumn equinox also the earth is inline with the sun with us moving towards the sun from here on in and the southern moving away hence summer and winter. I am sure all you knew this but I just though- modern schools are great! I am sure I was wondering if Peter was going to kiss Jane when I was 7!
He asked me at the end if I knew all of that - I sagely said yes but I was glad he didn’t ask questions before

    Regards

    Pat

I thought the Equinox was 21st, or maybe even 23rd (or is that in September?)

7 is good going for learning about it. When I was 7, the girls wanted kissed, but the boys thought that was 'sissy'<g>

The day and night are 12 hours long, at the equator today. Not here in UK.

Errrrrr, you sure about 'not in the UK'? My understanding is that equinox is when day and night are each 12 hours everywhere, except where the sun rises at spring equinox and doesn't set again until autumn equinox. Equator they are both 12 hours every day......

Yes at our latitude the day length is 12 minutes longer.

Admittedly, this is due to the way the light is refracted and the size of the sun.

I think the equinoxes and solstices are usually on the 21st of March, June, September and December, but can be on the 20th. This year, both equinoxes are on the 20th of their months, but the solstices are on the 21st: I checked yesterday.

[Edit] I see from the linked Wikipedia article that the autumn equinox is usually on the 22nd (inc. this year) or 23rd, and not the 21st, and that the spring one is usually on the 20th. I was probably thinking of the solstices.

                      Hillary great avitar!

Not wanting to prolong my 7yr olds project but I think the point of the spring equinox is that day and night are the same due to the position on the earth on that day (at 1145 yesterday) Sun set is later in the day and sun rise earlier is that what causes the pedantic discrepancy

                      Regards
