This happened to a friend of mine. She closed her account, and went elsewhere....

I think it happened me once, but as I didn't have much knowledge about such stuff, I didn't know if it was me or one of my contacts who'd be spammed. Anyway, I just stopped opening anything I didn't recognise and marked it as spam. It went on for a little while, but seemed to sort itself out once I didn't open and binned/spam box.

Clear the address book on your old email address. That'll sort it

Aaaaaah - that explains a lot! I was getting spam from myself, that I hadn't sent. I opened a new account for regular use, and monitored the original one, as I was still receiving proper emails too. But I did clear the address list - no more spam!

I have run malware and changed the password, if that doesn't work I will clear it down.

I read somewhere that hotmail itself has been hacked. Could be right, could be wrong.....

This common issue is down to someone hacking into your address book (on the Hotmail server) and spamming some or all of the entries. Initially you should change your Hotmail password. Also you could edit all of the addresses so that they are invalid (eg. by inserting a 'dummy' character) such that if they are stolen again the addresses are useless and your friends will no longer receive any spam that is apparently from you.

Unfortunately security on Hotmail servers does little to address this problem despite regular upgrades to the software

May the wind be always at your back,

Another one for change the password. A few months back I had this problem, the wee bleepers were trying to sell tablets that "enhanced" the ability for a man to raise an object and cheap plastic handbags Changing the password worked (probably unlike the tablets)

I didnt change my password Fifi, but I did clean my lappie 3 times. I think I have cured the problem, as nobody has complained recently that they've received more of FF's tablet thingy offers.
