  • Something to get your brains cells going!!!

Ok, I aplologise in advance for this thought but I thought I'd share it as my OH did late last night and started a big debate when really I wanted to go to sleep!

Is the Earth heavier now than say a 1 million years ago? Someone he works with throws these random thoughts out there and then watches everyone squirm as they try to argue their thoughts, so he passed it to his fam. and I've passed it to you.
I don't think it can be as we self generate, produce and burn and stuff leaves into the atmosphere- and the earth creates more resources. I'm no scientist but in my brain that seems right but there are thoughts out there about the earth heating up and this affects density therefore affecting weight.
Over to you! Any thoughts anyone?

No answer to that one, but other questions - Why don't sheep shrink in the rain? Who was the first person to put a slice of pig and something out of a birds bum together and make bacon and egg?

Some atmosphere gets lost (apparently the moon pulls a tiny amount, compared to the total, far enough out that it can drift off into space, or something), there are meteorites, the occasional thing gets sent into space by human effort (most of it comes back, one way or another, but there are bits on the moon, something on Mars, etc...). Which makes the bigger difference? Dunno, but it's an interesting question.
Apart from 'lost' atmosphere, things from 'the space program' and incoming meteorites, I don't think anything else can affect the actual mass....

Wool only shrinks in the wet because it has been stretched first. On the sheep, it is pre-shrunk!

            Definite gain.

Apart from all the space debris (meteorites etc.), there is also a quantity of solar wind particles which collide with the earth (causing the auroras) and various other solar ejections including hydrogen, helium, oxygen and iron. These all occur on a daily basis.

The amount lost in terms of the heliosphere is effectively balanced out by the amount gained from the sun's ejections (like water flowing through a lake, some flows out, but the same amount flows in), and besides, are we allowed to count something so far away from the earth as being part of its mass?
The amount of weight lost by launching spacecraft and satellites is also negligible as these don't occur particularly often in comparison to the above and are generally made from as light materials as possible.

Also, if the heliosphere counts as part of the earth's mass, then all the satellites should too.

            Definite gain.

Now that sounds like a good idea LG If himself had posed that question to me late at night he'd have had a pillow over his head! I'm sure there'll be some very interesting and intelligent answers, but I haven't got one.

Flipping heck gal- that beats the typical bedtime question in this house!

( don't be naughty children...I'm talking about which herbal drink are we having!)

OK- I'd go with heavier too

Solar energy must be being converted into something ( energy=mass n all that)
Space dust and rocks must also be adding to the weight.
We must be losing something via the atmosphere- but my gut feeling is that we're gaining more than we are using.

Everything else on/in the planet is being constantly recycled isn't it????

ooo...err....BUT...the Earth is cooling down isn't it- so it must be losing heat....hmmmm...

Yes, but that would only mean it might contract, not lose mass.

Just looked this up, and apparently the earth gains 40,000 metric tons a year in space debris. That's a minuscule amount compared with the total mass of the earth, but it far outweighs anything lost.

Who cares. The earth is flat. If it starts to get too heavy, the folk near the edges will just push sommat overboard!
