  • Some folks just don't understand.

I went outside to do my few chores I do before work. I let the 2 big dogs out so they can play tag with each other. I hoed half the garden while the hens watched/supervised from their pen. There must be an event coming up or else in progress. Six horse drawn wagons have gone past the house that I've seen so far.

Glad I'm working from home this week. It gives me some extra time to do some things in the mornings while it's cool.

Some of my co-workers are into boating, motorcycles, and trailer camping which I can understand but if I say anything about my vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, pond, chickens, or bees they just zone out. I know that stuff isn't super exciting but it is interesting. I've learned to keep quiet about it with my co-workers.

What do you folks do when you encounter friends or family that just don't understand the enjoyment of doing 'normal' things outdoors?

(I should add that one of the guys at work says that if a 'Stuff Hits the Fan' or 'The End of the World as We Know It' scenario should occur he's immediately bringing his family to our place. I told him they'd have to get in line behind my kids and their families. As far as I can tell he's not doing any preparation for such a scenario. And I'm not doing what I do for such a scenario. I do these things for enjoyment but they'd sure come in handy if problems were to arise.)

Fortunately I have never experienced negativity, everyone I speak to is really interested & some have even taken up the hobby.

I take the easy way out, I only mix with fellow gardeners. Its like a coffee morning at the WI but in the pub with beer.

I've been subject to 'strange' comments too

"Why on earth would you want to waste time making jam and chutney out of your own fruit and veg...it's such a faff when you can nip to the local shops and buy such a massive choice of different types ."

was the most upsetting - said by a very close relative.I genuinly think she was totally confused by the whole thing!

Unfortunately we have only come across 2 other British couples here who do a similar thing so yup- the rest do very much zone out...unless I give them a pot of chutney ( which you can't easily find here in the shops)

I find that people I know are genuinely interested, and love it when they are given a bag of beans, or some courgettes, etc, but I do get the 'glazed over' look when I start rambling on about my latest discoveries in my family history research

Whenever I talk to my friends about growing my own food, they look at me to say I am weird and turning old before my time.
Just because I am 25 doesn't make me old. I find it interesting. I some times just ignore them and carry on talking about it.
I feel sorry for my fella when I go on about growing my own fruit and veg and what I am going to grow next year ect. But then again I have to put up with him when he goes on about fishing and keeping fish ect lol

Before I got enough space for a veg garden, aged 24, I used to happily mow the lawn and plant and water flowers in my shared student house... I was (perhaps rightly!) considered odd but all the other housemates and their friends made good use of the garden once summer started!

I think I only bore people when I'm at the seedling bit. It's an absolute miracle for me that I can feed our family from our garden. Once the crops are up and running, I keep quiet so that I don't feel that I should be offering my stuff about to all and sundry. It's amazing how many people tell you they they 'like' runners or sweetcorn etc once they know you are growing it.
Don't be worried what people think about your hobbyDWS, you are the one to get the enjoyment and benefits from it.

I think lots of families got used to 'grow your own' - maybe generations back - during the war and during the post-war depression they kept it up through necessity. The most recent resurgence of interest has been fuelled by some great gardening programmes on TV and a lot of nostalgia for the 'old days', especially in modern Austerity Britain.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

grow exhibition/giant veg and take the veg and hand it out for free at work and to your neighbours

this gets people interested in growing their own stuff the following year
